I just started a job this week, and I really enjoy it so far, but I woke up at about 4am this morning with dizziness, vomiting, and a low-grade fever. I'm going in because I can't imagine why I wouldn't get fired for calling out in the first week, but I'm curious about others opinions on this? |
If you're sick, call out sick. |
Don't do that to this family! Call and list your symptoms. Let them know that you are willing to work through it, but let them choose whether to expose their kids. |

I wouldn't be angry if my nanny did this. But I'd damn well expect they'd get better and then be super reliable in Every Other Way going forward. If they got sick two weeks later they'd be fired. |
WHY WHY WHY would you go an expose the children to the stomach flu. Bet your ass I'd be piss if my nanny showed up sick. |
Agree. I'd be suspicious and disappointed, but I would also realize it could happen to anyone. Hopefully you had excellent references, and you recover quickly. It would be unfair if you just had bad luck and got sick again right away, but as a new employer I wouldn't be able to judge your bad luck vs. lack of reliability, so I would probably let you go if it happened again soon. Good luck, OP! |
