Strange potty training habits? RSS feed

Anonymous
So I just found an ad that was for PT work, with an infant for mainly just a couple hours in the morning and/or afternoon to take out to play and then bring him back to parents work to feed and sleep. Now this was listed in the ad:

"We do some out of the ordinary stuff you'd need to be ok with:
* we carry him in a sling and don't own a stroller
* infant potty training/elimination communication: he tells us when he has to go (most of the time at least), and we hold him over the toilet or sink, sometimes even letting him pee behind the car or a bush when out in public.
* we let him go barefoot as often as possible, but have light booties for when it's too hot/cold."

I get the sling usage (baby wearing), and I kind of get barefoot when in certain areas though I am not too sure about doing that in a downtown area of a major metro city. The infant potty training really weirded me out though! Are there really people that do this? I guess over a toilet is not that bad, but in a sink or behind a bush in public??? Ewww...

Sound like New Age attachment parents gone overboard.

The early "potty training" which really isn't potty training as much as knowing your child's pee/poo schedule is something sort of common, but allowing a child of any age to pee or poo in a public sink is just downright disgusting and disrespectful of others.

I wouldn't apply for the position because I would be unwilling to:

A. allow child to go to the bathroom in a sink
B. allow child to go to the bathroom in public

If they have these strange habits we can only assume that there are more.

The sink thing is pretty gross... But otherwise, I am friends with a mother of two who did infant potty training and swears by it. Her now 3-year-old was completely potty trained before he turned two and she says her 6-month-old lets her know when she needs to go. Now on the other hand, we have a mutual friend who is a med student who said that until they're between 18mos and 2 they can't actually control the muscles that make them go potty. Seems inconclusive, but other than the sink and in public thing, it doesn't sound too weird to me. They sound like hippies.

This is another perfect example how a professional nanny needs to be sensible about what she knows is right, or not right.
