It is stated in my contract MLK day is a paid holiday. However, I was just told I have to work so they can go to the inauguration. I am a bit ticked off because I was volunteering. I love the people I work for but I find this out of line.
Anyone else have this come up? Should I ask for extra pay? For me, it really isn't about the money though. I just need some type of guidance as to how to handle it. Thanks all! |
Pull out the contract and refresh their memory for them. They simply probably just "forgot". Let them find someone else for the day since you already had other plans.

If it's in your contract, then they'll need to find back up care if you really want to volunteer. If you don't care so much about volunteering, they either need to give you a different day off or pay you extra. |
I was given an issue with mlk day too. The kids are off school then of course and also the tues after. The dad emailed me to ask if I could shift my hours and be off mon, mlk, and then work a longer day tues. well, mlk is in my contract as a paid holiday and so no, I can't "shift" hours. I can work extra hours and be paid appropriately for both the holiday and the additional hours needed on Tuesday. I didn't go into that specific detail but I did say I'm already off per my contract but yes I was planning on a long day tues. I hope my paycheck comes out accurately. In your case though I think you have a few options- 1, say you can't do it and you have plans, 2, ask for time and a half bc it's a holiday, or 3, ask for an additional day off at a diff time to make up the difference. They cannot MAKE you work a day off given in your contract. |
Mb is on maternity leave do I don't get it off anymore. Both kids are home, so she needs extra help :![]() |
