So I've used my work credit to purchase something personal amout is 60.00 and I plan to pay it back this afternoon but I feel like I overstepped it. I was in line to pay and when all my stuff was ringed up, I looked for my card and I forgot that I switched purses the night before. So i used my wirk credit card, How do I tell my boss? Is this something to get fired over? |
Make sure you tell her right away (and I might fib a little and say you weren't paying attention to what credit card you handed the cashier vs. you decided to use it knowing it was the wrong one). I would also offer to run to an ATM right away and get the $60. If she says don't worry about it, make sure you bring it in tomorrow.
I think the only reason MB would be upset is if you didn't tell her right away, tried to hide it, or didn't pay her back right away. |
+1 to everything and especially the white lie. |
I would tell her immediately, preferably with cash in hand and apologize and let her know it won't happen again (and follow through even if it means returning at a later time for your purchases.)
In many jobs across many professional fields this could get you fired- especially if it happens again. |
Being the cash with you and go to their house immediately. If the purchase was in the evening and you are working the next morning then I guess you could wait. Don't tell them without cash in hand. Don't tell them you forgot your credit card. Say why the other pp suggested- you mixed up credit card. I might even add that as you were in line you got an emergency call and were flustered. Apologize like your job depends on it. |
I'm an MB.
If you told me the truth, no white lies, and paid me back asap (preferably when you told me about it), I would not fire you for it. Actually, if you were totally honest and upfront, I wouldn't even think about it after you made it right (or made a plan to make it right). Things happen. Be honest and own up and things will be ok. If they aren't, you don;t want to be working for this family. |
Don't use a white lie. Explain that you were already in line and needed the item. Then give them the cash. No big deal, I think, as long as you make it up asap and DON'T LIE. I would be much more upset if someone lied to me. |
So long as you tell her the EXACT SAME DAY and pay her back that day or at the latest when you show up the next AM then I don't think most reasonable MBs would be mad. But timing is critical so it does not appear you tried to hide it. |
I wouldn't do the white lie either. It doesn't make sense. If you didn't realize which credit card you had when you bought the item, how did you figure it out after the fact? Its not believable that you were reviewing your receipt and noticed a different number. If you had inadvertently used their's instead of your's you wouldn't realize it until the purchase didn't show up on your bill.
You do need to apologize profusely and understand why this really was not a good thing to do. You were basically using their credit card as a back up to your own finances BUT more importantly you did something that you knew you shouldn't do but did it anyway. If you had forgotten your credit card and didn't have one from your employer, you would have had to go back to the store. Since you had their credit card you chose your own convenience over acting responsibly. Choosing your own convenience over your job is one of those bad traits that people don't want in a nanny because that type of overall perspective leads to other bad judgement choices that affect the kids more than a credit card. |
Sorry but I'd do the white lie.
"I was on the phone while checking out and didn't realize which credit card I used! I'm so embarrassed and sorry! Here's the $60, and I promise it won't happen again! Totally my mistake!" If you're a pretty good nanny, it shouldn't be an issue. If you get fired, I would be very surprised & they're totally overacting. |
I would think less of a nanny for: 1. Being on the phone while interacting with a live person standing in front of her (so rude) 2. Not being mindful about something money-related. I would not fire the nanny over this, but if it happened a second time I might. Also, I would ask the nanny while out with my child to not be on her cell phone while interacting with store clerks. |
Wow really? Are you kidding? Sometimes things come up and you have to answer the phone in the middle of a store check out. Not the end of the world and I'm quite positive my 16 month old charge isn't taking note. |
PP, what top priority event might happen to necessitate answering your phone in a check out line?
I mean, dying relatives and urgent medical issues aside, I can't really think of much that couldn't be handled in 5 minutes after retrieving a vm. |
