PP.here. Sorry she meant "like a cold" as in she had the opinion that it was part of what comes along with being a nanny. You get exposed to things like colds, stomach bugs, etc.

Not that the illness itself is like a cold.

Old thread but when ever possible parents should stay home and not expose nanny as if Nanny gets sick, then she needs to take time off.

Agreed which is why we told her not to come in and then when she said she still would, we told her to take the day off anyways.

Adults can get it but it’s very unlikely.

It's very likely.

Did you tell her she’d be paid? You should have paid her.

Yes. In the first post I made it said we would of course pay her.

I hosted a nanny share a few years back and both kids got HFM. They are actually the most contagious before the spots appear, when they're feverish. We kept the kids home with their respective parents and gave the nanny the days off for the fever days and I think the first day of blisters when they were still really rundown.

But as soon as they were feeling better, the nanny was happy to come (at her suggestion, not ours). She said she'd had HFM a few times (I think you can only get it twice or three times? There aren't many strains) and so was very unlikely to get it, and wasn't concerned. We would have had to keep the kids home for like six more days if they'd been in daycare. Kids recovered fine, nanny never got it.
