I have heard some Nannies at the park + storytime admit to me that since they work part-time, they are paid in cash, check or Venmo.

And since they are working for straight ca$h their employers are not paying them the minimum wage.

What’s wild too is that DC had the highest minimum wage in the country ($17 / hr I believe). In many states, especially in the south, the minimum wage is $7.25. I actually think $17 / hr for minimum wage is pretty good but $7.25 is crazy.

If you google “typical minimum wage jobs” the very first one listed is childcare workers, followed by waiter, cashier, hotel housekeeper.

Obviously there’s a huge difference between a minimum wage childcare worker and an educated, experienced nanny. Employers and nannies must be able to discern appropriate pay for each individual.
