I am sitting here reading these posts while nursing my newborn and I'm compelled to type this. To the parents that are offering wages below minimum wage you should be ashamed of yourselves. Not only are you offering scraps you're expecting a nanny to care for not one but two or more children PLUS do light housekeeping and cook. This is modern day slavery and I read so many responses from parents to the nannies and so many of you are shaming them for having their requirements as if to say "how dare them."

The minute a nanny has a voice or stands up for herself by saying what she expects, all parents turn into victims and it's been going on for far too long. It's sad that this site only allows the "moms" to have an outlet by having so many different areas for them to rant but the moment a nanny says something it's game on. It's ridiculous! I'm saying all this to say, if you can't afford a nanny there are other options. Be respectful, the cost of living is high so why would you offer a nanny $15 hourly then expect them to just accept that. Having a nanny is a premium, these days with covid around it's a luxury knowing your children are at home getting the one on one care that they need.

Nannies
You guys need to also be respectful and know your worth if these parents aren't saying the right things as far as pay goes please no need to shame them but respectfully decline and keep it moving. I am by no means muting anyone but this trash talk and shaming on both sides is just ridiculous and we are all ADULTS. Nannies if you are not getting the respect you want on here create your own blog site because I see how "for the parents" this site is.

I am expecting a lot of angry highly opinionated moms to trash talk under this post or they may even flag it. I don't care, I won't spend my day going back and forth..
You guys can talk among yourselves
Everyone have a great day!

You would think they would get it lol who can pay their bills with $15hr I can’t even with $25hr but thank goodness I do know my worth and the families I work for treat me very well. I will say , there are some Nannie’s expect top pay but don’t have the experience or credentials to back it up. You can’t say pay me $30hr but been a babysitter for a summer

Exactly! I’ve been a nanny for well over 15 years and I don’t even request 40 phr for one kid some of these Nannies are insane to ask for that amount and have zero credentials. The respect factor goes both ways

I live in SoCal and in my city (SD) minimum wage is at least $16.85 (beginning 01/24.)

Yet I am still finding it hard to find Nanny jobs for $20/Hr to start.

But I won’t work for under minimum wage.

I don’t know of any Nannies on this site making $15; if anything most are paid north of $25 an hour with varying levels of “luxury” services. Some are getting paid $40 + with benefits. I personally pay ours $31 an hour, and I don’t feel it’s a luxury service. I’m paying her because she is a genuinely loving caregiver, engages with my kids, and keeps very good care of them. I’m not getting any extras which is reliability (she’s late or needs a day off at least 5-6 times a month), she doesn’t do any kind of food prep or tidying. She is given a car to take the kids out so her car isn’t used. Outside of the fact that she really loves my kids and I need childcare due to the lack of care disaster is why I keep her on. Many of us parents are desperate for basic quality caregiving and we are paying out to have it. There might be some $100k Nannies out there but she better be Mary poppins with a masters and several years of teaching and care experience for that. I think Nannies here with several years, education, and taking on additional responsibilities like cooking, cleaning, organizing might command more money but that’s my take. I’m grateful to our nanny for her care but also looking forward to when we aren’t paying the same as our mortgage every month for care.

This ... this is not what "modern day slavery" means. You must be confused.

Just because you don’t know any Nannies that’s getting paid that amount doesn’t mean there aren’t any. A parent contacted me asking to nanny two kids at $22 phr it’s a nanny share that’s $11 per child no benefits no paid holidays. They have a n ad up right now so please

So that’s actually $22 an hour, not $15.

So let me clarify since I see the need to with you annoying birds, one of the parents in the nanny share can't do every day care so when the nanny has one child the nanny they choose will only get paid $11 according to what they explained to me. THAT IS INSANE! Not to mention they can't pay holidays and vacation. I get what the OP means when she said find other options because nannies are private care which means childcare will cost you a bit more than a daycare would.

Then don’t take that contract though I’m sure some Nannies would. Why exactly does a nanny cost more than daycare? A center based daycare has higher costs due to several factors whereas most Nannies have the benefit of using the parents home and vehicle. It’s also a lot easier to watch 1-2 kids as opposed to the ratios in daycares (4-6). More work for less pay which is why a lot of staff get into nannying. Unless the nanny is heavily credentialed then the cost is more or less the same.

Of course I’m not taking the contract I was clearly drawing a reference. You do know that there are Nannies that are well qualified and educated but chose to be a nanny because it pays more. Private care cost more I don’t care what you say and just an fyi I use my own car because most of these parents don’t offer their cars to drive their kids around which is fine as long as they pay for the wear and tear on my vehicle which I make sure to add in my contract. I am qualified and have the credentials to request well over $25 hourly. At one point in my life I was a Montessori school teacher for a couple of years in my life and unbeknownst to you that job pays peanuts much like public school teaching. I’ve been a nanny for almost 30 years and I come with impeccable references that’s why I can afford to turn down jobs and contracts that try to low ball me. Nannies should bring more of these topics to light because we get treated like we have no idea what we’re doing and also like we are uneducated. Some of us are actually going to school while we care for your children. It’s just insulting to offer someone below minimum wage to do any job if you can’t afford it do it yourself and that’s the argument..

I’m sure there are educated and credentialed nanniesbut you also know there’s a range of experience. On average most earn $22-$30 an hour in my area, with some paid time off in there that the majority of families provide. I think a lot of the folks posting on this board talk about luxury and a nanny costs more but there’s no real justification other than what I provided about the credentials. There’s no required education or experience and thus you have a lot of women who don’t have those in this force as well. It doesn’t cost more because you say it does, it’s what the market will pay and that’s a big range with an average. The average nanny is still about the same price as care for 2 kids in a decent center in my area so for me it is the same cost as daycare and that’s why we have one.

That’s in your area ma’am. There are daycares that charge not even half of a Nanny’s weekly salary for one child so miss me with the nonsense. Some parents do require a teaching background or a degree to care for their kids so just because you don’t require it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Speak for yourself alone not everyone. Simply put a nanny can ask for whatever the heck she wants especially if she’s a vet in the business. I’ve learned a long time ago opinions are like assholes and everyone is entitled to one. Furthermore you’re not even a nanny so how can you speak from a nanny’s perspective. You’re also very wrong about the rates in DC the correct range is $25-$35 hourly. There are some nannies with the experience and credentials that deserve every penny and then there are those that ask for way too much and they’ve only been doing it for 1 year.

Vienna is $22-$30; and decent center daycares are $400-600 a week per kid. For 2 kids a nanny is the same cost because it’s a base rate adding a few dollars for each additional child. Home based daycare is cheaper but that’s typically not associated with “elevated” services so I’m not factoring it since Nannies are considered a luxury. I’m not a nanny but I’ve interviewed several and we got plenty of candidates with that range. Anyone is entitled to ask for what they want but it doesn’t mean that’s reflective of the entirety of the market - I’m discussing averages that I found to be true.

OP- I don’t know anyone hiring a nanny because of Covid any more. Those days are over.
