$30/hr is the going rate and what we paid her. We are generous with compensation and benefits. But you’re right that it just came down to no experience, no training and no common sense! One of the things that was bugging me was in the kitchen she used a sharp knife and left it blade side up in the drying rack. Truly so stupid as the kids are always running around the kitchen.

It's obvious to understand that she didn't match your expectations. And of course, you are completely right since you are looking for an experienced Nanny. How come she wouldn't take the lead and still need instructions.

Don't feel bad, just move on and start looking for someone else.


The problem is that people out and out lie or don't mention their former nanny's weaknesses. Either they are afraid for legal reasons or just want to foist her off on someone else as soon as possible. I've had this happen a lot: major things like missing work about once a week. not cleaning up after the kids or herself, or not being a comfortable driver.


OP - yes with one of the moms in particular it was an awkward conversation and I better understand why now.

What was she spending her time doing? What was she supposed to be doing?

Find a list of questions online before you make the reference call. Take notes as you go. Stick to your list of questions, and note any red flags from either answers or unwillingness to answer. You especially need to ask about the reason she’s no longer working for them.
