Nanny of 15 years here. Caring for sick kids is part of the job. If you don't want to wipe boogers and make lemon honey tea for crying children, then don't be a nanny. That being said? Parents if you make your nanny come to work and care for your sick child and she gets sick? Do not give her grief for taking off. |
This would not work for me, and one of the main reasons to hire a nanny is to not have to unexpectedly take off for sick children. I would let her go. |

ous]I had a cold last week and my nanny said she doesn't work if the employer is sick (she doesn't work if the kids are sick). Is this normal/typical? She said you can't send kids to daycare if they're sick but...my kids weren't sick, I was. I stayed away from everyone. It was hard because I needed to rest to get over it and I couldn't AND had to work and take care of the kids all day. This isn't a covid issue, we are all vaccinated. Depends on your illness. Cold, yes. Covid, no. A serious illness like cancer, she takes care of kids but not you. You hire a nurse for that. |
Nanny here. Caring for sick kids is part of my job. Being in the house with sick parents is also part of my job. Generally when the parents are sick I work extra hours.
Your nanny is wrong. |
When the kids are sick, I always give nanny the option - Larla has a cold / fever. If you are comfortable, come in..if not, we understand. We have three kids and usually one parent stays home and works from home while tending to sicky while the nanny takes the other two to try and keep the spread minimal. If it the last day of a longer cold or not yet 24 hours before going back to school, nanny covers that..she has never said no to coming in. We did tell her not to come the two times kids have fevers during COVID times but once negative tests came back she came back.
I can't imagine her saying no to coming if I or DH was sick. |
This. I take care of kids, not parents, but I'm not skipping work when a parent is ill unless I would be in danger. |
No it's not normal. My kids were sick with soar throats, coughing and stuffy noses. Have been checked for Covid and results came back negative. I still go to work to take care of them. Mom and dad has to work and it's my job. This so called nanny is making excuses ! |
Ridiculous!!! You families expect so much from the nanny as if we aren’t human. Typically in a daycare or school environment parents are asked to keep their kids at home if they are sick, some parents will listen others choose to ignore and get the entire classroom sick. Why is it so different if a nanny asks the same thing? I’ve been a nanny for 20 years and if I had the sniffles the family will ask me to not come in and it will be paid even if I insist the still told me it’s best I stay home and get some rest. You are a monster expecting a nanny to work around your germs when you wouldn’t do the same. What you don’t like for yourself don’t do to others NANNIES ARE PEOPLE TOO. We are not your door mats so respect us as such. |
Sigh, reading comprehension is important here. OP and posters didn't post about the KIDS being sick, they posted about the PARENT being sick. No daycare makes you keep your kids home because mom or dad has a cold. Try to read more before you post something idiotic like this. You're an embarrassment to us professional nannies (though I suspect you're a troll trying to make nannies look bad) |
+1. It’s the lurking troll. No good nanny would refuse to work because the parent has a cold. And I’ve actually never met a nanny who didn’t feel that caring for her sick charges was part of her job. |
Vaccinated people are still coming down with covid. I don’t see the issue here I would’ve required a negative test prior to coming in and to be paid for whatever time off. In a normal time wouldn’t be an issue but considering people are dying of covid she has every right to refuse |
What do people think about a parent having flu like symptoms? Should the nanny be expected to be there? (Parent works from home and is constantly around) |
Nanny here. I work if kids and parents are sick unless it’s Covid or the flu . |
If I didn’t work when the kids or I are sick, I would never work. The kids are always sick and so am I. |
