Au Pair wants change visa, withdraw from program RSS feed

I’m curious about legitimately helping ap get a student visa and allowing her to live with us - but not working. Our kids are older and we don’t really need an ap anymore but our current ap is wonderful and truly wants to stay in our city and study in her chose field, which is centered here. Is this at all a possibility given current immigration issues? Her term is “up” in August so we are hoping there might be another covid extension possibility but if not is there any way to make is possible for her to stay?

Yes it's possible but very expensive. You'll need to prove you have the resources to cover school at international rates, for the entire duration of her school, as well as additional cash for living expenses. We looked into it and for Montgomery College (a community college) the international rates were around $30k per year. My memory isnt that sharp about this but we would have to bring a six figure amount to the table. Note that if you sign on as her sponsor and you have a falling out, you're legally on the hook for her living expenses for a significant period of time (memory fades but it is something like 8-10 years). Since she isn't allowed to work, you have to pay all her expenses, regardless of whether you continue to want her around. If you're prepared to take on these risks and expenses, hire an immigration attorney and get started.
