Au pair’s long weekend trips RSS feed

The simple answer is no. After a full day of work and arranging back up care, I'm not going to want a date night or other reason for scheduling evening hours so AP can claim it wasn't a vacation day. Hell no.

Let AP know that she needs to take at least one full week off. Cap her weekends to 5 trips (at most) or 2.5 (if she's getting Monday and Friday).

She has unrealistic expectations. You either tell her after a few of these long weekends that it counts as her vacation time, or seek rematch.

OP here. We will be talking to her about her plans after she returns from this week’s vacation. Our LCC advised that we should keep in mind she gets 1.5 days off per week, so if she can work in the morning of one day or the afternoon of another, perhaps we should count it as her half day off. Unfortunately that doesn’t work well given that she’s typically unavailable in the afternoons, which is when we most need her.

She’s not really trying to take advantage of us (I don’t think), I just want to make sure we have a clear conversation so that we’re on the same page. Based on her existing/scheduled vacation, she’s already over her 10 weekdays and has a handful of additional trips in mind.

She has 1.5 days off per week. Therefore she can work Friday afternoon when you need her, and have her scheduled 1.5 day Sat am-Sun am. Sun pm and Monday am could be gratis. Present it like that, and have a calendar marked to show her how much time she’s already used.

OP, please keep us posted. Interested to hear how this works out and hope the conversation goes smoothly!

General policy: Long weekends can be scheduled on the holiday weekends, we get the Monday off. Other than that, it should be whole weeks only. Exceptions dealt with on a case by case basis, but the expectation is that the norm is none other than long weekends that we also get off.
