Not sure why this is even a question. Any time I've lent money I've asked "When will you be able to pay me back?" and made a note on my calendar and followed up with them on that date in writing. |
Water under the bridge now, but what I always do is advance my au pairs their first week's stipend, $200, when they open a bank account. They arrive on Friday, I give them the $200 on Saturday to open the account, and then I don't pay them their stipend for the next week. |
Ditto. We advance the salary to have money to put in the bank for a checking account. $100 seems high and honestly with low interest rates, there’s no need for a savings account for one year. |
OP ok ok mea culpa. Especially on the savings. This is Bank of America’s new deposit policy, BTW.
But I still think she should return the cash. |
Our first AP we advanced some $$ for a leisure event she had to prepay before her first stipend pay. She paid us back that Friday. Same AP needed money for a dr visit and again paid us that week. THat your AP didn't pay you back right away is a sign she thought it was a gift or isn't contentious about that kind of thing.
Make an exit checklist and add it to the list. Mention it at the rematch interview with the LCC -- they can put the fact that she didn't pay back borrowed money on her write-up, which might be enough to get her to pay you back. You may not see the money again, but you should certainly mention it and ask. |
+1 on the exit check list idea! |
OP here
She gave it back after last stipend. Lesson learned for me. 1) don’t use BOA 2) only do checking account 3) get money back immediately or don’t lend Thanks! |
How did it come about? did you ask? and what did she say? |
I just told her I had forgotten about it up until know and she said she had too. |
She can't withhold her stipend for any reason. You can hand her cash, have her sign for it and let her hand it back to you or a portion of it to pay you back. Personally I think you should let this go. What if she says that she paid you back? Consider it a lesson learned. |
This issue appear to be resolved. But seriously, why should the HF not get their $200 back? |
You can absolutely withhold stipend. For example, my au pair was out of Euros in duty free so she asked me to buy her perfume. When I paid her the following week I wrote Stipend-minus perfume on the Venmo re: line. |
