Propping baby up with bottle RSS feed

Another twin nanny here and I prop up bottles. I am right there with the babies and when they were tiny infants I tandem fed because they side fed. But I am honestly curious why it is bad to prop; simply because it’s not a binding moment or is there a reason not to?

I did it with all three of my children. All three got full academic scholarships to top tier colleges. Othing wrong with this.

It is a major choking hazard because if they have trouble swallowing they can start to choke and inhale milk which can be very dangerous. When a person is holding the bottle and the baby starts to choke you can immediately take the bottle away, but a bottle prop is not responsive to the baby.

And yet millions, nay billions, of babies were fed with propped bottles and survived. It only became dangerous with this generation of mother's who think a nanny must look at a baby constantly!

Not at all. A choking hazard for sure, especially that young.

Everything for an infant is a choking hazard.

Twin mom here and I propped a lot. I was never more than one baby length away when I did it so there was no serious choking hazard.

What? What generation was this where the majority of babies were bottle-fed but no one bothered to hold them during feedings?

Another risk of propping is ear infections

Yes, we know... and millions, nay billions, of kids survived without seat belts, bike helmets, child labor laws, antibiotics, vaccines, etc.

You get we know better now, right? When we know better - we do better.

And as a nanny, I have always been more vigilant about keeping eyes on a baby than any of my employers.

No.

I hold the baby. That's my job.

Former infant twin nanny here. I did prop, though not habitually. Mostly for spitups, burps that could’ve turned into chokes, readjusting someone, etc. I was never more than a few inches from the baby being propped and I always had a hand on the bottle whenever possible. Sometimes it’s necessary, but if you’re talking a full feeding where one is propped the whole time, even half the time, I vote absolutely not.
