There are national banks that have totally free checking accounts (BOA Student is free). Even if AP leaves the host family they keep their account. They can have account open even after they leave US, and most are thrilled to have US form of payment. Of course, AP needs to speak up if they don’t want the bank account. HP can still pay by PayPal, Venmo, Zella or whatever the new thing is...

Is there a social security office in Arlington?

Sorry for mis-information... They apparently were in the same Edsall Rd office in Alexandria (they told me that a friend told them to go to Arlington, but there is only disability processing or something like that there, so they went back to Alexandria office)

SSN came in the mail today, in 4 business days

PayPal, Venmo and Zella all require a bank account or credit card to be tied to them.

My host family took me to the bank and didn't ask me if I wanted an account.
I left them (rematch) a few weeks later and had to pay $ to close the account.
I could have spoken up (I didn't want to be unpleasant) and they should have asked me what I wanted (or not).

Cash is not an option for us. You need a bank account to transfer your pay directly to you. It's in our handbook. Also, it's not prudent to just leave cash around--mkaes you a target for theft.
