What is wrong with getting our monies worth. Most of us at our job don't have the luxaary to take breaks when the child is sleeping or napping!

Oh please. My employer gets mimosas every Friday morning, a catered lunch every week day, and enough down time to do as she pleases with her work day. Sometimes that includes napping in their downtime room. She gets plenty of down time, and makes about 5’timrd my salary. I’ve had plenty of employers who had hours of downtime depending on their job but still get paid holidays.

Guaranteed it will bite you in the ass - a month will come where you work 40 hours every day for the month and then have a Monday off for a holiday and they still want Saturday for free. The side deal will quickly become the new normal. You have two choices keep it and reap the benefits knowing st some point you will lose out or put it in writing and know the gravy train might end.

Nanny again- Any hours I work over 40 have always been and always be paid. I don’t get OT but I’m paid for every hour I work. My nanny family isn’t out to screw me over.

Um, getting paid for 40 hours when you work 25 seems like a GREAT deal to me. But go ahead and quit, someone else will take that position.

I have MLK Day off paid per contract. We all agreed to this. They seemed to understand how holidays, guaranteed hours and PTO worked. These people are graduates of top universities with impressive degrees and respectable careers. How could they not?

They wanted me to work Sunday for about 6 hours and I agreed. Well, it seems like they think this is how holidays work. I’m off on the holiday with pay but just make up the day on a weekend. When I showed them our contract they seemed genuinely confused and said, “oh, we didn’t think of it like that....”

You didn’t think paid vacation/holidays meant what they’ve meant for decades and decades for most working people including you? Do you think they’re really that clueless or do you think they think I’m stupid enough to be manipulated into working a Sunday to cover my paid holiday?

I’ll work a Sunday but that’s all OT pay.

Great Post !! Stick it to them, these cheap skates trying to take advantage of us nannies!

Wow, so much bitterness. I hope you find a better job than whatever is making you sound so hateful.

Then get a new job if that is the luxury you want. Every job has perks, that is one of them for nannies.

Some ppl just aren’t made to be a boss and it sounds like you are one of those ppl.

You won't be getting Over Time btw. Call it a hunch. Let us know though.

You may not get over time, but should get paid regular pay. Often companies do not count holiday, vacation, or sick pay towards the 40 hour requirement for overtime.

Technically, she’s not actually working over 40 hours (holiday, vacation, sick time doesn’t count as actual hours worked) so she likely will not receive OT pay.

There is no guarantees here. , MD, DC and VA are all at Will States which means contracts don't mean squat. They can fire you at will for any reason for any cause, and don't have to explain. They can also change contracts too. Any jobs can that is what an At Will state means.

I have signed contracts before too and they then come back to me before I even start saying they can't afford me. and dismiss the contract.

If you aren't PAID OT for over 40 hours, you are being screwed. It is illegal not to pay OT.

Thanks for explaining that. I guess the perk of being a nanny is relaxing when the baby is asleep. I guess I am not use sleeping on the job or surfing the net for more than 10-15 minutes.

Guess not, as that is not a perk of your job.

Well I guess you guessed wrong. I obviously pay taxes and I’m fine with this arrangement.

I’m the OP and I have 45 hours guaranteed but work about 45-50 hours per week.

It was a PP who works 20 but has 40 guaranteed. That’s not u heard of for nannies with charges in preschool.

Ok. I’m the OP.

Some other PP has derailed the thread who works 20 hours a week and doesn’t get overtime.

I have 45 hours a week guaranteed and usually work about 45-50 hours a week. I do get overtime after 40.

I did work Sunday for about 6 hours and get paid this next Monday. We discussed how vacation/holidays work and I sent some articles discussing banking hours in detail. They seemed to be agreeable but I’ll find out for sure Monday.

I do expect overtime pay for the extra 6 hours on Sunday.

I’ve worked for too many families who do it right to waste my time with a family who is here to penny pinch and screws me iver. I’ve done that, and won’t do it again.
