Nannies are adults with their own living expenses; how do you suppose they live on less than $15/hr (and that is what you pay a young babysitter, not a nanny). As others have mentioned, nannies are a luxury and most families can not afford one. My last family paid me the entirety of one spouse’s income. It was a temporary decision to put their children’s lives as a priority while not losing years in the workforce. I encounter a lot of nannies making unfair wages and they simply don’t stay long and the children rotate through childcare options and end up going to “school” at a very young age. You can find a good “school” option, but I would steer clear of daycare options, personally. |
You may also want to consider an AP, which will have many of the "benefits" cited by PP, but require more of you in the way of investment in the relationship/food/car insurance/privacy sacrifice, etc. It's cheaper, but possibly riskier. |
Go with daycare op. It's less riskier. The majority of nannies and stay at parents are glued to their cell phones anyway. |
Arlington/550k/$20 an hour base/50 hours/1 baby
All in w taxes and benefits it’s close to 70k a year I think? So yeah, wouldn’t be doing this if we made significantly less. |
I have a great package! $50k to start, $300 health/month, use of family vehicle and no gas required, full room/board ![]() |
Being penalized is not the same as not paying. And since some nannies are paid to be available, no they aren’t paid extra when the parent is late. |
Arlington at the moment; Our income is around 400k. Its amazing how much your spending on a Nanny; I guess having a nanny is really a pure luxury (like a sports car). |
A good nanny is expensive, no doubt. However, the first three years of life are the most important. If you cannot afford a nanny who is a teacher, who engages your baby with narration, songs, sensory experiences and reading, your baby is much better off on a good daycare.
Our nanny makes our lives possible and has been an amazing teacher and loving caregiver to my daughter. She is worth her weight in gold. |
Someone else posted on another thread that the best advice they got about being an employer is to make your peace with how expensive it is. I think that’s correct. Our nanny is a career nanny. This is her full time vocation and she is excellent at it, and it gives us great peace of mind to know our child is happy and learning and well cared for while we are working long hours at our jobs. She deserves to be paid a good salary with good benefits. |
A lot of the families pay $15 per hour in cash OP or they offer a low weekly amount for a live in nanny. Most nannies are not doing this forever. It's a job until they get married or find something better. Go on care.com and I am sure you will find a good nanny for $15 per hour. A nanny with a college degree will be more expensive but I honestly don't think it matters. Most people who have a college degree do NOT become nannies. Dcum is not real life. I have been a nanny for over 10 years in DCM area. I have interviewed with hundreds of families. The majority of families offer CASH and they do not make 500k per year. |
NP here. Legally, nannies are hourly employees and must be paid for every minute they are working, which certainly includes the times that you are late. Equally important, we are paid to be available for our scheduled shifts, but at your beck and call! Your attitude is insane. |
Do you not think an experienced nanny should be making a minimum of $20/hr? |
At $15/hour and no overtime, you're still talking about $30,000/year. (And that's assuming that you're cheating by not paying employment taxes.) Nannies are not cheap. There's no reason that they should be, given that people should be paid a living wage for their work. |
Speak for yourself. I have a degree, I’m married and I enjoy being a nanny. I would never take $15hr and have always received competitive packages. Btw, Care.com is a joke. Ps You don’t sound like a nanny who gets good offers/packages. |
Truthfully no. They are blue-collar workers with very little college education. When I graduated from Law school, i didn't even make as much as some of these nannies do. Its surprising and sad. I guess if you can find someone willing to pay you the amount some of these nannies are asking for then.... good for them. |
