OP here, we're talking 6 yo and 3 yo. Nanny is in her 50s.

So you don't want the three year old to have an afternoon nap? I can't imagine agreeing to that. Surely you know that over-tired children are usually behavior problems, not to mention accident prone.

Get a sitter, not an experienced nanny, and nobody will care.

Nonsense. And possibly the most ridiculous response I have ever read on this forum.

She is a NANNY. Nannies play and set up art projects, playdough projects, read books and play games with 3 year old!! That is the nannies job, Idiot.

Signed , an experienced and educated nanny

Our nanny of several years is really complaining. Plus she seems to not know how or want to engage with the child who is home most of the afternoon. She just wants to study, or nap, or cook. She also does not engage with the kids when they are all home after school, 4pm. The kids tell me she just cooks their dinner then and let's them be in the playroom.

I have left out suggestions of things to do but this is getting disturbing. Perhaps we need a heart to heart that she just does not like non-napping children or doing stuff WITH the children? Maybe she wants more of a housekeeper role and we ramp up the pre-schoolers time in school through the afternoon? Or time to get an au pair? More energy plus can help the AM and after school best?

What does she do all day? What did she do before your youngest started school?

She doesn’t sound old - she sounds unqualified to be a nanny.

You sound like a very disgruntled parent, not a nanny. Someone who want to "study, nap and cook" all day is not a nanny. Check yourself.

Most kids transition out of naps at 2-3. That is normal. Forcing a nap is not healthy. Nanny is just there to keep kids alive. Time for a change.

Who told you most kids stopping napping at 2-3? Your girlfriend? You should know better.

I don't know any kids who napped past 2-3. Mine dropped the nap at age two. You should know better.

Most of mine napped until kindergarten.

How many kids do you know?

My nap until kindergarten. But yours might be different. You mentioned that during that time she cooks is this just for the kids or she cooking the family meals? Clearly she is used to having that uninterrupted time to work but, do you think your kids are making it really hard for her to get that job done?

You also mentioned napping but I cannot imagine somebody complaining to their bosses that they can’t nap anymore because the kids are not napping.

OP here, I will give her some more suggestions or get out one thing every evening for little one to do. Self-play 4-6 hours an afternoon is not good. Neither is nanny hiding in the kitchen or on the couch - which is not our priority at all.

First couple weeks back in school can be rough on everyone. We talked and she'd like the 3 yo (who is as large as a 4.5 yo and super energetic w/o naps) to have some activities to sign up for after 9-12 class. She has soccer, I will look into more that fit in with the family schedule.

Other kid dropped her nap at 4.5. Not little sis though!

An au pair will not do housekeeping stuff or make dinner unless it's explicitly child related. For example, they can do the kids' laundry but will complain bitterly behind your back if you throw in all the kitchen towels. But you do have the right idea. Most APs have a vision of their job as playing with kids all day, but often forget all the cleanup necessary with kids unless you explicitly tell them it's part of their job.

I would not want an over-tired child on my watch every day.

You are assuming the child would be overtired. My 3 yr old change is perfectly fine not napping anymore - in fact, I think he is better behaved and happier with a solid 12 hours at night and no naps.

Same here.

Well, I have four. One napped until 4.5. Two stopped napping before 3. One I had to make stop napping right at 3, or he wouldn't go to sleep until after 9, on even a 1 hour daytime nap.

Kids are different. Go figure.
