Fair rate for nanny watching 2 kids from another family in addition to my 2 (double date scenario)?

Okay, but you didn’t say they were paying extra. The assumption was that they wanted to pay the same rate. For double? I’d do it too.

You don’t have to hire any of us. I expect the families for whom I sit to treat me like an adult capable of handling information and making informed choices. I also expect them to treat me with at least a little respect. I have NEVER had a family offer less then $10 more per hour when there was going to be at least one more child, and normally they just ask how much it would be to add xyz child. Of course, I’ve also supervised numerous sleepovers too, that way parents can sleep, and parents are aware that I charge for every hour. You are entitled to pay what you want, provided you can find someone to accept it, and you’re entitled to discontinue with any sitter at any time with little to no notice or reason.

And that is what i've done in the past. We had a neighborhood girl who we were told by her mom charged "$10/hr" so we booked her to sit for a few hours for 2 kids; when it was time to pay she clarified that it was per kid (?!?). Never again had her sit when i needed a sitter for both kids so she missed out on jobs by charging exorbitantly more than the 1 kid rate instead of a few dollars an hour more.

Wait, you booked a babysitter through her MOTHER?! And you didn't clarify when she arrived?! That's your problem, right there! My grandfather told one of his friends I would watch all the grandkids during a reunion for free; when I showed up, I asked how many kids there were and gave my rate. I also promptly left, because the adults were ridiculous enough to expect that I would undervalue myself like that. That was oh, 2 decades ago? Family doesn't obligate a teen to babysit at a certain rate unless the teen is there and agrees. Next time, book the sitter for yourself, not through the sitter's relative!

By the way, I charged $10 per hour in the Midwest... 2 decades ago. As a teen. Now, in the DMV area? $10 is too low, unless you have 1 very easy child and you find a teen to agree. I don't see an issue with the teen telling you $10 per child, but I do think $15 would have been more reasonable.
