OP again!
Thanks to all of you for jumping to my rescue. Unfortunately the minimum wage in Illinois is $8.25/hr. I don’t know how anyone is meant to live on that, especially after taxes, but there you go. I am currently nannying for one child, and he’s going to be 4 in April ? With him in school, I work about 35-36 hours a week. Also, no, I unfortunately do not receive any of those benefits (sick time, pro, insurance, holiday pay). None of that =\ I may have solved my problem though. What I did was mention that I was getting an evening and weekend job, and the mother right away jumped in and said they’ve been meaning to giveback me a raise, and since they’ve both just started new positions, it should happen soon. Fingers crossed, everyone! |
| OP double posting because there was supposed to be a smiley face after mentioning his birthday and it turned into a question mark for some reason. |

I'm also in the western suburbs.
$10.50 is too low. $12 is the minimum that a legal nanny should make. That's even low- more of a babysitter rate. Most of my friends pay $18, but they've had their nannies a long time and have multiple kids. $11 is min wage for downtown Chicago only, not suburbs. Suburbs are maybe $5 less than Chicago. The economy has picked up and nannies are making more than 3 years ago. I think you need to go to your family and tell them nanny wages have increased and a fair rate would be $12 or $13/hour and you need a raise. But if you do this, you have to be prepared to look for another job, because they may fire you. |
