Give no more notice than time you can afford to lose as many MBs will let you gonna the spot. Make sure you get all money due you. Good luck.

Get your paycheck for the week and then give notice. If she fires you on the spot, you are paid up.

*Very Important*!!-
Make sure to CASH your check first.

Then once you have what is owed you, you can let them know you will be seeking out greener pastures.

This family doesn’t deserve any notice.
They are taking you for granted.

Op here: Thanks. I sent an invoice today and mb seemed a little weird at pickup. There was 1 Friday after work she wanted me to babysit so she could go to happy hour. I said no and she asked if she could give me an extra $100 to do it. I agreed because at that point I was already going to be late for my Orangetheory class. I think she was surprised I actually put it on the invoice. She asked if she can pay once a month last month instead of biweekly. I agreed. It's now been 4 weeks and I haven't received my check. When should I say something again? Tomorrow or Sunday?

Send her an email saying you must have your payment asap. Don't work until it's paid.

Once you have your current check you deposit it and wait 3 days. Then you write a letter giving the amount of notice in your contract. You hand it to MB and say what was written in the letter:

"MB,

It has been my pleasure to care for your children for the last X years. However, I am finding it difficult to achieve work/life balance since I have been staying late last minute and, this past month, being paid late. Please consider this my formal notice that my last day will be X.

I hope we can remain in touch, and I wish you and the children the best.

Sincerely,

Jane Smith"

I would then add that you will need to be paid in advance for your last weeks of work, since it would be a shame to end your formal relationship with bad feelings over late pay.

She may just fire you after that, but if you are unwilling to chance being cheated out of your last check this seems like the safest route to take.

Title just screams “I have issues with working for someone.”

Grow up. Welcome to the real world. Even MB’s have bosses. Your nanny family is your customer. Act like a pro.

You don’t fire anyone. You quit if you don’t like it.

Op here. I got the full payment and fired my mom boss. Sorry you can't understand sarcasm.

You go, girl! Congratulations to you. More nannies should stand up for themselves.

Thanks but to be honest this was a hobby job. I could quit suddenly because my husband makes a high income. I feel very fortunate. I also met another family tonight and I have a feeling they want to hire me!

That makes me think so much less of you, OP. I don't need to work either but I do not have "hobby jobs" - I work with children and that bond is important to me and not a hobby.

And what you wrote was not "sarcasm", btw. Sarcasm doesn't switch subjects. Look it up.

Hmm you sound a bit sensitive. I just meant that I don't depend on the income to pay for bills etc. I work as a nanny because I love children too. It's hard to stand up for yourself when you really need the income. I experienced that when I was on my own in my early 20s.

Do you always like to correct people? It must be exhausting being you. It was obviously a joke that I wanted to fire my employer. Nannies have a lot of power though. Most families do not want to change childcare providers. There's a reason why parents get really upset when we quit. It's like getting fired or experiencing a break up.

My chosen career is not a "hobby" just because I do not need to work. Yours should not be either. Everyone can stand up for themselves and most of them need the income.

She's right! Good for you op. I'm happy you stood up for yourself.

Really, OP - "hobby job"? My dentist doesn't need to work for the money but I sure as hell wouldn't go to her if she called dentistry her "hobby job"! And the person dedication of the person caring for my children means a hell of a lot more to me than my dentist's dedication!

I am beginning to see why your MB wasn't appreciative...

I wasn't going to correct you and I avoided correcting for days you until you used "hobby job". I got the joke - but that joke was not sarcasm or sarcastic. It wasn't even sardonic - it was a play on words.

You're way too sensitive about this. A hobby job is not a bad thing. Being a part time nanny is not necessarily financially rewarding for me but it involves personal interest, thus making it worthwhile. I'm able to care for babies and I love babies. The fact that your career is something I consider a job shouldn't upset you.
