| $30 an hour is very high. I'd expect a lot and not just someone hanging out with the kids making chicken nuggets. It doesn't matter what their income or expenses are, its about how much they believe is a fair amount $12 is low. $30 is insane. If you want to be rich, find another profession or start an agency. |
[b] ? Do you live in SF or LA or NYC? If not then you have no idea about the market or the rates. I live in LA and for a legal educated nanny the rates are minimum $20hr. I don't know any nannies who make chicken nuggets (maybe only the nannies you hire??) and they all have degrees in my circle. Most nannies in my circle earn $25-40/hr and do tutoring or teach another language or do household management. I have never heard of a $12 nanny!! |

Simply let the referral family know of your situation as well as the reason why you cannot work for such a low rate.
Just so when things do not work w/the other family, they will know why. |
You are posting on a DC message board and most of us live in MD/DC/VA. In the suburbs, pay is not $30 an hour, maybe $20. Most people pay more for tutoring as its travel time and its a specific skill set. If you are not interested, say no. What is with all the drama? Its a babysitting job, probably paid in cash. |
Op here- I live in SF, I posted here because there are many LA and NYC AND SF nannies who also post on this board. Even in DC I'm sure $12 is low! I turned down the family by text and haven't heard from them since. I actually said my rate was $20/hr and understood if they weren't willing to pay that rate and offered them names of agencies (which will of course be more expensive with the agency fee but whatever!). They didn't even reply. Good luck finding a $12 nanny in California! |
Yup unavailable, schedule conflict, so sorry!

Family contacted me again, this was my reply:
It was so nice meeting all of you!! I am free tomorrow and Sunday but I don't do set hours for the month, I've always been paid hourly even with my full time position. My usual rate is $30/hr, but I do babysitting for $20. I completely understand if this doesn't work for you as I know it's a lot different in Italy. Let me know if I can send you a list of nanny agencies or websites that might helpful in finding someone within your price range. Thank you again for thinking of me! Thanks so much for the help nannies!! |
| Oh I forgot to mention when they contacted me again they said instead of $12/hr can we do 120 hours a month for $1500... which is $12.50/hr. |
| Yikes, time to block their number. You were fair and handled it well. |
