| I think $15-$18 an hour is very reasonable. |
Good luck finding a decent nanny with any credentials or experience. |

I searched for a nanny between 15 and 20 an hour - and found none who could work or wanted to work legally. Finally found a wonderful nanny for $26 an hour with both education and experience. Perfect background check. CPR certified. Excellent references. And an all around perfect nanny.
We only needed a nanny 38.5 hours a week and with taxes and benefits, over total bill was around 60K last year. |
| These are super weird responses!! |
Get an illegal and only pay $10/hr! Hire the cheapest you can for your child care. |
| Another thread of inflated wages. Most people pay $600 a week period. I've been doing this a long time. We pay more but I know this is the case in DMV regardless of hours. |
Stressful is exactly the right word... for everyone. |
| You can findlegal nannies for $20 an hour. Depends on hours and location and other perks. I had plenty of qualified and credentialed nannies respond to an ad. At least 3 were American born. I ended up with a a lovely older nanny from my country (who has been here for many years) who speaks my native language with dd. Makes homemade bread and cheese for dd and they have fun all day. Legal, taxes paid, etc. |

I found a brilliant, dependable and loving nanny for $20 an hour ONLY because she lives within walking distance to our apartment. She is less than 2 blocks away. Otherwise she would have been between 20 and 25 an hour. She was sick of driving to work.
Sometimes you just luck-out. |
I agree with this. Especially with one child who is an infant, you can absolutely find a good nanny at this pay level. It may take longer and more interviewing, but I have hired legal nannies twice (two different children, spaced far apart) for this salary. They were both very good. I will also say that paying more does not always get you the best nanny. |
MB here and I pay $27 an hour for one child. I didn't want anyone undocumented or without experience and an education however. I got the "gold standard" for nannies - - former preschool teacher. I am not trying to inflate anyone's wages. It is what it is. |
No paying more doesn't always get you the best nanny - just most of the time. Pretty much like any field. You pay for education and experience and fantastic references. If you don't pay what the great nannies are asking for, someone else will. It is just the market. |

OP, I live in the Arlington area as well and have employed a two different nannies.
-First nanny had an early childhood education degree and 2-3 years daycare experience. We paid her $22.00/hr/one child for 40 hours a week and 2 weeks vacation. -Second nanny did not have a degree but had 10 years of nanny-ing experience. We paid her $20.00/hr/one child for 40 hours a week and 2 weeks vacation. The rates are definitely inflated on this forum. Just keep looking. You'll find someone great! |
Fine if that is what you wanted to pay, but know that you can get someone legal/experienced/educated for much less than that. |
| I live in north Arlington and have an amazing college educated (UVA) nanny. Her first year we paid her $15/hour. Alll legal through a payroll service. |
