Apparently my moms groups pays babysitter $8 / hour

This is a mother's helper type position and while I would be happier with a second helper, $8 per hour does not seem unreasonable. The job is basically make sure the kids don't devolve into a lord of the flies scenario and get mom if anything of substance comes up.

Would you do the work for that wage? I wouldn't. So sad to take advantage of poor people like that.

I agree she should be paid more, but, if you feel so badly why don't you slip her an extra $10?
