Pay IRS reimbursement rates for any miles driven during the course of the job. Do not pay for commute to/from job.

Other parents may have higher standards than you do.
They don't need your permission for that. Sorry.

If this nanny's compensation package is inadequate, OP needs to step up some useful perks. Or nanny takes a better offer elsewhere.

But if you can't afford it, OP, just be honest with her. Maybe there's something else you can afford. Good luck.

Talk with her, or she may be leaving you.

Better for OP if nanny decides to quit she doesn't sound worth keeping.

We pay $17 plus a lot of benefits such as paid holidays, sick time, and I come home early and let her go home and we still pay for those hours. So I think we are competitive.

Your "competitive" rate of $17/hr just isn't. Your benefits are average. If she's any good, she'll have better options.

This is why I can't bother with people saying they're offering "competitive" compensation. They need to mention a clear range before my interest will peak.

$17/hour is very competitive, unless it is a share. Deluded nannies on this board can claim otherwise but that is not reality.

You have no clue how more wealthy families compensate their nannies. None.

The wealthiest families I know pay their nannies the least. A very rich friend in LA was SHOCKED to hear how much we pay our nanny. They pay almost half and pay it under the table.

There are a lot fewer wealthy families than nannies who'd like to work for them. What wealthy families do isn't a benchmark for the market, just for one segment of it.

Why does it matter what wealthy families do?

You can't legally reimburse nanny for the mileage driven to commute to work. At least, not without declaring it part of her taxable compensation. So I suppose she is either confused or is just asking for a raise?

This.

Can you just get a cheaper nanny, OP?

No. This is silly, and should be a red flag that your nanny is going to be trouble.

lol your nanny is crazy!!

Did we get paid for our gas to go to work?

It doesn't matter what she is compensated, no one gets paid to and from their work. Real estate agents can't deduct those miles, for instance, the way they can when going to preview or show houses. No is the only reasonable answer.

I know lots of workers getting free metro cards. Can you at least do that, op?

In 10 years having nannies we have never paid (or been asked to pay) for the commute. Some of nannies have had 1+ hour commute given dc traffic.

She knew those costs when she interviewed with you.
