What to do about the holidays

I'm an MB, working in a place with lots of contract work, so I get both parts of the story. If you work one day a week and it is Thursday, this year you just happen to lose 3 days of work. If you are ONLY scheduled for Thursdays, you lose 3 weeks pay. In our place of work, schedules are adjusted to give Thursday workers time on other days of week, but we might be exception. Vacation is different: if OP is paid when they go on vacation, she can afford to pay nanny.
OP, you need to think how easy/hard it was to find 1 day of week nanny, does the nanny have other sources of income, and do you want to risk her being unhappy... If she is a great nanny, I'd try to pay her salary, but maybe position that half of it is for holidays and half is bonus? In that way she can't complain that she won't have money to pay bills.., |

Be happy that she accepted such a crappy job.
Don't pay her and you'll soon find out she'll get another job elsewhere ... Geez |

| You can't just change the game now that it is inconvenient for you. She usually gets paid for day's that you don't need her, why should this be different? In the future, please spell out your expectations in writing. |

If she is only working for you one day a week, I am sure she is not relying too much on your position as a huge source of her income so I wouldn't stress too much about it.
I am sure she already knows this and has already planned ahead. Do not pay her for those three days, esp. since you won't get paid either. And you do not owe her a bonus, but if you feel like giving her a nice little something extra for being so awesome, then that is entirely up to you. |

Nanny here. This is whammy family offers:
Guaranteed hours (their choice, holidays, etc) 1 week my choice for vacation 1 week their choice for vacation 1 week personal time I have also worked for families one day per week and I was always guaranteed those hours. Just be good to your nanny,pay her, and she won't resent you... |

| I am a full time nanny now but have worked very part time in the past. I worked just enough hours to manage my financial responsibilities while also making time to study and graduate with honors. I also worked a very part time job once that was solely to pay for a medication my mom's insurance did not cover - it cost $400 each month. You can not assume what another woman's paycheck is worth to her. Your best bet is to inquire whether she has the ability to switch days. |
