Sick day? RSS feed

+1. This is crazy. When I'm truly sick, I can't care for two toddlers and they don't want me caring for their two toddlers. I work through minor colds, headaches, etc. but I've never worked for somebody that expects me to come in if I'm vomiting or have strep or have something severely contagious

Sounds like they have a bad week. getting a family member fly in might not get be that expensive, they just need to know. Our grandma doesn't mind coming even on short notice (flying from Florida), and it is actually generally cheaper to buy a ticket even last minute than to pay for back up care especially if more than one day. So I think MB just wants to be clear what to expect and what doc said. With one patent out of town it is always challenging.

You said you have a 24 hr bug and was better. Why would they fly someone in? By the time the person arrived, you'd be back at work. Your story doesn't add up, OP.

But if that's your story then yes, you are definitely overreacting. You are also projecting and making assumptions that are out of line. You are also taking too many sick days in your first month of work.

I don't know why I came here hoping for actual input and advice. What was I thinking?

So if my nanny took a sick day 2.5 weeks into the job and expected to be paid then I am totally a sucker right?

What the .....??!!

Okay, I won't even go there.

Anyway, it is the family's responsibility, not yours to secure a back-up childcare plan in place upon hiring you. This should be standard common sense-wise. In life, my philosophy is one should always always have a Plan B. If she is not responsible enough to have one in place, then that is her bad. Let her deal w/the consequences. Tough luck for her.

Personally, I am not a clairvoyant, but I get a strong vibe here that this job is the wrong fit and won't last very long.

OP the other posters are nuts, if you have something more then the common cold then it is irresponsible to go in. My employers actually asked me to not come to work if I am sick. I took a sick day one month into my employment and they thanked me.
