+1. I've found that the range is $15-16 for one child with those credentials. A lot of nannies request $17 or more, but I don't know a single family who has started their nanny at more than $16 for one child. However, it is common to bump the rate up by $1 at the one year mark and bump it by another $1-2 when the second child is born, so nannies who start at $15 often end up making $17 or $18 within a year or two of their start date. |
PP again. Correction: I do know one family who paid $17 per hour for one child but they did not guarantee any hours and anything over 40 hours was paid in cash at the same $17 per hour rate. The rate per actual hour worked probably ended up being about what the $15 per hour nanny with guaranteed hours earned. |

Can they afford to pay a fair wage, OP? |
It does sound a bit terse...I would say something like, "I know we discussed having a meeting in August, but I would really like to have one ASAP. I am trying to decide which avenue to take re: my future and would like to know if you're interested in keeping me on. If so, can we please move the sit down to "X date"?" I should have clarified that I've been working with this family for more than a year and responsibilities have increased since the start date. |
They are not paid the same thing nor are they asking in that range. There are college degree people flipping burgers too for minimum wage. Unless your education is used on the job, there is no automatic salary bump for having it. |
Automatic? Who gets that, besides Feds and unions? |
I have the same qualifications but with two years less experience and I start at 20 an hour for one child and I only do child-related household chores. You are under-selling yourself, PP. I have never had a problem finding good positions. |
I disagree - I will definitely pay more for a college graduate regardless of his/her major. It speaks to a higher level of knowledge that is passed on to my children. |
I am one of the families in NW DC that starts much higher for one child. |
| And I'm one of the nannies who has a $25/hr minimum, doesn't matter where you live. |
Very true. |
Please share at least one example of higher level of knowledge that is being passed on to your child at 6mo? 18 mo? Any age in fact before the pre=school starts? |
