We live in a 3rd floor apartment so we have balcony, otherwise no. |
I've offered to pay for Starbucks should she ever wish to go there. She is also most certainly allowed to take water/snacks from our home as well! |
LA nanny here- It's hot year round in the valley and we are outside all day. It's not humid here but if we can be outside in 110 degrees in the summer, your nanny can handle 20 mins. I suggest going out first thing in the morning. If you're asking her to take a still between 1-3pm when it's hottest and horrible I can see why she doesn't like it but wtf it's only 20 mins!! We are outside all day every day. |
*take a stroll |
Are you doing a morning walk, OP? |
I call troll. What 2 year old isn't napping between 1-4??? |
Another LA nanny and I've got twin 2 yr old charges. We are outside all day everyday! When the full summer hits we don't go to the park (not well shaded) but we opted for water play in the yard. In the mornings we are outside for at least an hour. In the afternoon after nap, we can stay out till dinner. The kiddos love hiking right now, so we do lots of basically level hikes in the woods, they love nature. I couldn't fathom staying in doors so much! |
I'm a nanny to a 2yo and he naps from 11:45a-1:30p most days (he's been a 4:30a riser since birth)...so I don't find it to be impossible. OP your requests are very reasonable. We are outside from 8:30/9a until lunch at 11/11:15a and then again from 2/2:30p until dinner at 5/5:15p. It is hot so we walk to the wading pool or take a stroll down a shady street or we bring water shoes and walk in the fountains. I prefer it to being indoors since the family doesn't have AC and it means better sleep for DC. My MB jokes that toddler boys are like puppies and you have to run them around in the sun to get any peace in the evening ![]() |
Where do you live? |
The heat is exactly what makes it less reasonable. Personally I try to only do outdoor activities with the kids during those hours on most dc summer days if it's a water-based activity. I totally get all the nannies saying they can't imagine keeping the kids inside all day, I agree. But really, this nanny is not keeping him inside all day, she's keeping him in 3 hours. And three of the hottest hours of the day at that. |
He needs to go out in the morning, not the afternoon. |
Mine. He wakes up at 7. Goes down for a nap from 11-130 and then is up until bed time around 7. He's been on this schedule (he put himself on it) since he was about 16 months old |
I know with the school districts like Howard county in MD it is against the law to have children outside if it is over 100 or if the air quality is in the red. I go by that. If at 3 pm which is the heat of the day and it's 102 outside a toddler and I would be inside. Unless at a pool or in a wading pool in the shade. |
I take my charge out at least twice a day (they also live in an apartment) - for a long time in the morning (sometimes two hours) and we walk to t he library in the afternoons when it's really hot which is 15 minutes each way. We both come home a little sweaty but it feels better than being cooped up the apartment all afternoon - for both of us. Kids need to be outside. I don't think there is anything wrong with telling your nanny/sitter that you want your child outside for 30 minutes in the afternoons when she works. |
If it is 90 or over it is too hot to be out during those specific hours since they are not in the shade. If it is just 80s then she should suck it up for a half hour. Even still, going about 3 is better than 1/1:30 |
