It all depends on what you are looking for in a nanny and if you are paying under the table or not. For a college educated nanny with experience, you are going to pay 20 - 25 (maybe find someone for 18 if the rest of your package is good). If you are willing to hire an illegal then you could get away with anything.

My income has a lot to do with the nanny cost. Her rate depends on my income. Same thing with groceries. You can buy food in Whole Foods or much cheaper Trader's Joe.

Good luck with your discount dentist and nanny. You get what you pay for in life. And a good nanny is not going to lower her rate based on what you can afford.

We say GOODBYE to frustrated and aggressive nannies on DCUM.

We say GOODBYE to the bitter and poor Mommies on DCUM who want to brag about having a nanny even though they cannot afford one.

+1 What is worse is that the Mommies get angry at Nannies because they can't afford them. Potential MB's like this should use daycare or stay home.

American parents are NOT entitled to cheap nannies, just because some of them think they are.

Please be realistic. We are not very rich people.

Thanks for your advice !

Oh bless your heart. The fact that you are not rich has no bearing on my rate for doing my job with my experience, skills, etc. You are basically saying "I want a Ferrari, what should I pay? Keep in mind I'm broke."

You should determine your own budget and then find the best nanny that fits into that budget. There are nannies that work for $11 an hour and nannies that work for $35 an hour. If you can only afford $11 an hour than ask a spanish speaking friend to write you an ad and post it on here and craigslist. If you can afford more then try care.com or the sitter website. If you live in a nice area try the neighborhood listservs, but be prepared to pay the top rate.

Good luck.

We want to offer $15-16. I believe it's reasonable. What do you think?

OP, we're in N. Arlington and have an infant and toddler. We pay more than that net for both. We paid about $15 net for one child which I believe is the going rate.

Your going rate is a myth.

The going rate is under $15 an hour I can assure you. I can post an ad for under that and get 20 replies in an hour.

If the number of replies is your indication for a "going rate", I can easily see your confusion. Most parents have higher expectations than that, and wouldn't want those people, even for free. Don't you know how many people are unemployed? That doesn't make you nanny material, IMO. You may disagree.

OP, you should only negotiate in gross terms, not net.

You will find many qualified candidates if you offer $16-19/hr and all the usual benefits.

2900-3000/month net. Do guaranteed hours of 45/week. you never pay less than that amount, but if you need more hours than that set an hourly rate.
