This! Don't expect back pay for Columbus Day, just say that Monday brought to your attention that you both had failed to clarify the details of your holiday pay and could you make a list of holidays so you're all on the same page. Non-confrontational, no need to feel awkward about it at all. |

OP, if you are talking about "Columbus Day," then I am not sure if your family considers this a major holiday because while banks and postal offices are closed, many schools are still in session and public transit runs on a regular schedule, etc.
I think paid holidays would mean major holidays like Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving, Easter, etc. Since you are getting paid a very good salary, my advice would be to not rock the boat and let it slide. I wouldn't make a big stink over Columbus Day. |
| You should definitely clarify your paid holidays, as well as what will happen when you are not needed (in writing!), but agree that they probably don't consider Columbus Day a holiday, especially if they had to work. |
They were off work and I did not get paid. |
Well if you were told not to come in, you should have been paid. Clarify the agreement, in writing. If they are backing out on the holiday/guaranteed pay bit, I'd likely give my notice. |
OP here. I asked for guaranteed hours ( 14 hours/week) The federal holidays which normally fall on my work days are Columbus day, Veterans day, MLK, Washington's Birthday, Memorial day, and Labor day. |
| my work place (I'm an MB) does not give vets day or columbus day off...also either president's or MLK. I can't remember. |
I don't really think that's the issue here. Its not as if OP is expecting a day off and pay for a day her employers are working. They were off, told OP she was off, then docked her pay. Not cool, especially given that they had an agreement regarding holidays that fall on her work day. |
Irrelevant. Also irrelevant is what I as a nanny receive for paid or unpaid holidays. All that matters here is the agreement this nanny had with her MB and DB, and since there was clearly some confusion on one side or the other, it makes sense to talk about it. |
