Moms would you hire a nanny with oral herpes? RSS feed

I dated someone who got cold sores on occasion. We dated for 7 years and it never passed to me. Personally, as long as she handles containment appropriately, it would not concern me.

Nanny here- I wouldn't work for a family if the parents or kids had cold sore, no way! I'd quit, so yeah it works both ways and you are not unreasonable OP.

I don't think sitters should be kissing your kids on the lips. Boundary concerns.

OP, have this discussion with your pediatrician who you know and trust for accurate medical information and advice.

Does this sound reasonable, OP? If so, please share your doctor's thoughts about this. Of course we realize that doctors have differing opinions about this. I think they would have to typically assume that your sitters may have poor hygiene habits, as is the case with most people, unfortunately. People tend to be in such a hurry with everything.

My question is are you positive it's a cold sore? I don't carry the virus and have never been exposed to it but I have gotten a huge zit near my lips before, that may look like a cold sore. Anyways, if it was a cold sore I'd prob move on to a different nanny, I'm super affectionate and would want nanny similar to myself.

I get a cold sore a few times a year. I take every possible precaution to not pass it on to anyone. I do not share food, drink or kiss my charges if I have one. I wash my hands frequently and use paper towels to dry my hands. It's been 5 years and hasn't been an issue.

I would pass. I be too paranoid all the time. Not worth it.

You'd care for your own kid if you were appropriately paranoid.

If you're such a nanny hater, 14:57, why do you spend so much time on a nanny board? No matter what the topic, you find a way to drag out your beat down non issue of how you think everyone should be a SAHM.

Is it because you're bitter that you decided to SAH and are bored out of your mind and dependent on someone else's money? Or is there another reason you hate nannies?

You're really tiresome.

You're just a loser! Seriously. Why do you come on these boards and post such unhelpful and hateful nonsense. Just because someone would pass on a nanny with a cold sore, which could be transmitted to her children whether unintended or not, does not mean people should not employ nannies. We should just steer clear of people like you!

It'll be enlightening to see if anyone here makes the effort to discuss this question with an informed physician, before jumping to "paranoid" conclusions, either way.

Op here. Thanks for the responses. I'm actually surprised to see so many people agreeing with me, but I think it's a legitimate concern and my husband and I will have to think long and hard about it. I could absolutely bring it up with the kids' doctor. I'll post the response I get here for everyone.

Our girls are 3 & 14 months and then we also have a son who's 7 that she will only be with Pt.

If your kids are vaccinated against chicken pox, aren't they vaccinated against cold sores? Might be worth looking into.

I think this is hands down the dumbest comment I've ever seen on DCUM. Please stop working with young children and go back to school.

They are both herpes viruses, but they are not the same strain. Chicken pox is herpes zoster and cold sores are herpes simplex type I.
