You should take PTO, OP, and not burden your employers with your personal issues.

You should definitely tell her. The people I know who have passed kidney stones say it was excruciatingly painful. One person had it happen on a train and he seriously didn't think he would live long enough to make it to the next stop. It is entirely conceivable that you will be temporarily and suddenly unable to care for the kids when this happens, especially if you plan to have pain meds on hand just in case. MB needs to know this so she can work with you on a plan to make sure she or someone takes the kids quickly if you pass a stone a work.

OP, statements like this and the advice that you take PTO and not burden your employer are probably coming from nannies who are used to working in situations where they are unappreciated, probably because they are not good employees. No family is going to terminate a nanny they are pleased with because she MIGHT pass a stone and it MIGHT happen during a work day SEVERAL WEEKS from now. And no family is going to be okay with a nanny taking weeks of sick leave when she feels fine. If your employers value you, they will be genuinely concerned about your needs and will work with you on an emergency plan.

OP, I'm an MB and I would want you to tell me (if you felt comfortable sharing) just so that I could know that you might need some time off unexpectedly, or might have some uncomfortable days when the kids might get some more video time or you might not be as up for running around the park or something.

You could also just say that you have something going on that isn't contagious and will resolve itself but does mean some intermittent pain in the meantime. I would respect your privacy but appreciate the consideration you took to let me know that you aren't contagious.

Also, it would give me the chance to help (as another poster said) - pinch hit on a day when you're having a lot of pain, give you time off as needed and know that might be unpredictable, etc...

Good luck! I hope it resolves quickly for you.

OP, I do not think you need to share this information with your bosses if it's not interfering with your job. I don't go around on interviews and inform potential families that I have chronic migraines. This is why you negotiate PTO and/or sick days. If you end up needing them, you use them. As long as you are able to work and manage this with Tylenol I don't think this is anyone's business but yours. I hope you feel better.
