God only know what agencies do with your SS number. If you let them have it, make them sign a statement saying what measures they have in place to protect your SS number. |
But what do you do if a prospective family asks for it because they want to run a background check on you prior to hire? If you do not submit yours, then they cannot run a full check and may think you don't have one or have something to hide. This can cost many jobs. |
Just say you are not comfortable giving out your ss# but you would be happy to run the search of their choosing on your dime. This way you will have it on file for other jobs too. |
No one is going to hire you without your ss#. That's what it's for -- paying your taxes. At what point are they not "strangers?" Two days later when they offer you the job and you have to fill out tax forms? |
