Op here. This is basically my situation to. Mb comes home early sometimes and goes in her room to nap before I leave instead of offering to let me go a little early. They take days off but I still work because they want to go out without the kids. They just took a vacation but didnt take the kids, so I had to work. Not sure why I feel so bad about needing a day off.

+1! Last week MB came home early all 5 days (and then just hung around with us), and took off on Friday...so she could go see a movie. I know I am being paid to be here, but really, when you CLEARLY don't need me, would it be such a hassle to let me go early?

I think I can top it. BOTH of my employers took off all of last week, and sat around playing video games. I don't begrudge them their time off, but its really annoying to be treated like a commodity they paid for and just HAVE to get their money's worth. Come Friday the baby ended up taking a late nap and we all knew that he likely wouldn't wake up before it was time for me to leave. I had finished all of my tasks, cleaned the play room and they continued to sit at their computers in the same room. This goes on for nearly an hour. 15 minutes before I am due to be off, I hear a whispered conversation about whether they should let me go. Mom says, "but he might wake up!" And they make me wait out the last 15 minutes. By far their pettiest moment.

This, exactly! It is so hard to explain to non nanny friends the frustration and insult that comes with sitting in a home where you are not needed, regardless of if you are being paid. And I'm pretty sure most of us would rather take the time unpaid than have to sit around, many times not even being needed for child care, while mom and dad watch tv, talk on the phone, whatever...

That's just ridiculous! They couldn't let you go even the last 15 minutes? If their child were to wake up, they couldn't take care of their own child for that 15 minutes?

Let me guess. All three of you would expect to be paid even if they let you go early, right?

Why do you care what they do as long as you are getting paid?

They were totally within their rights and I acknowledge that. Doesn't change the fact that they clearly didn't need me, have never let me go early, and it would have been a nice gesture to let me go. They haven't done anything wrong, but its just another thing that gets filed in the back of my mind when they need something extra for me or a new job opportunity comes along. If you have no generosity or consideration for your nanny as a person, she's not going to have it for you.

You are obviously an MB who does this(and has a chip on her shoulder?). I would rather not be paid and let go an hour early than sit around and watch you play on your computer or not take care of your children when you are more than capable. We have feelings and lives too, and not everything in the world is about money. Jeeze you would think that people who do not see their children all day would be thrilled to spend time ALONE with them.
