Live-in nannies- what things to discuss before starting?

Do you know anyone who WANTS to live in someone else's home? Me neither. Nannies are no different than you and your girlfriends. Most nannies who live-in, do so because they don't get paid enough to support themselves. Just ask a few. Let's not delude ourselves here. The "cost savings" is for the parents, not the nanny. Who do you think you're fooling??

They respect your privacy on your time off and children are never allowed in your rooms, nor in fact are they without your prior knowledge and permission. Make it very clear that they are not to ask you to work, eatch kids for "a minute" (which may turn into hours) on your off time. Set up boundaries now and stick to them.

So the nanny needs to be the mommy and tell the parents how to behave?

When you can't really afford a nanny, you can't afford a nanny. Really. It's ok. No one gets everything all the time.

My sister was a live in nanny for 2 years after college. She wanted to try living in a big metro city that she never could have afforded on her own to do for 1-2 years. She enjoyed being a live in and traveling with the family. After two years, she went into teaching at the elementary school level back home. She saved a good chunk of her income from those 2 years.

Honestly, some of the nannies on this site should do this. There are too many nannies on this site who are constantly complaining about taking jobs they don't like because they are desperate for money and without savings.
