What would you do in a situation like this...? RSS feed

Just to carry this one step further, what do you think would happen to a nanny, if God forbid, one of the children got severely injured during the time the nanny got locked
out of the house?
Is having a dog to maintain, really worth this kind of risk??

And what if there wasn't?

Nobody cares what you wouldn't have done. OP was asking what users would do if they found themselfs in the same situation. Regardless if they would have done it or not.

I care.

This happened to me when I was a nanny. The door from the garage in was locked somehow. I was outside with the 2yo but had no phone/keys and couldnt get back in.
I went to a neighbors house and called my boss and he came home ( 30 min drive) to let us back in. After that they left a spare key outside.

On a side note, Temp was in the 90's and the neighbor didnt invite us in to her house to wait. She handed her phone at the door to me.....I would never do that, especially to someone with a child.

Accident's HAPPEN. Obviously the nanny wouldn't have purposely locked herself out of the house. If a nanny got fired over this, I'd say she's better off because for a family to fire their nanny after she accidentally got locked outside for doing one of her DUTIES....that would be ridiculous on the families part.

Accidents do happen. And nannies do get locked up for being negligent. Bottom line is be careful about how many responsibilities you agree to take on, while you are also responsible for the children.

My current family has planned for this and has swapped spare keys with the stay at home mom next door (because this happened to her). But if for some reason she wasn't home or I was working for somebody else I'd call MB or DB first to see if they were close enough to come unlock the door or if I should call a locksmith/break in.

I had previously been locked out twice before accidentally and that is why I now ALWAYS have a key on me if going outside. Neither times was I caring for a child at that time though.

First time I was with the kids as the grandma was taking them to school (I was a live-in). I ran outside to grab something along the side of the house, had called in to the last kid in the kitchen to not close the front door. As I am walking back to the door, just 4 feet away, she comes running out and slams the door shut. It was one of the ones that locks automatically unless you turn the lock inside first. Grandma thought she had a key but did not, so we called the dad who had a job that allowed him to come back to the house quickly to let me back in. I did have to wait outside for 30 minutes on a not so nice morning (really chilly), with pajamas on and nothing on my feet.

Second time, I was a live-in again and I was doing housekeeping in the morning hours. The dog needed to go out quickly so I let her outside into the backyard. This house was huge and the backyard was actually accessed by going into the basement and then down ANOTHER set of stairs. I didn't unlock the door from the inside as I was just standing in the doorway. Was calling the dog back, took one step out of the door way and a huge gust of wind came and slammed the door shut. Was dressed but had no shoes/socks on. I tried calling for help outside but the personal assistant was in the office which was more in the center of the house, not along the back wall. She had to go and run some errands and called out for me, didn't hear me and so she left. I didn't know this of course. Luckily the neighbor behind the house was letting out her dogs and I called out to her after about 20 minutes being stuck outside. Without shoes I couldn't climb over stuff to get into her backyard (it was multi-leveled yards and lots of rocks). So I told her the address and she went to go ring the doorbell. She did, no one answered because the assistant was out and MB was gone too with younger DD. Luckily, this family was ALWAYS leaving the front door unlocked, and so the woman tried the door and got in. She went to the back windows in the living room, and called out to me to ask how to get to the basement. I was back inside a few minutes later. I was so glad to be inside again! Everyone just laughed about it because one of the kids had gotten locked outside before as well. Just glad that the neighbor went outside so I could yell to her! I had no phone on me and I could have been stuck out there for much longer.

So this is the reason why I ALWAYS have a key with me, no matter what I am doing, how short of a time period, even if I don't think I will end up getting stuck outside, etc. Lessons learned, don't want to experience that ever again.

I didn't read the other replies, just wanted to share my story. At my first nanny job, this happened to the nanny next door. I got back to the house with the kids from school and she was hysterical and asking me for help. She got locked out of the house after going out for a cigarette (another issue) and didn't know what to do. English was her second language so there were some communication issues. The family I worked for didn't have a key for the house, so I ended up calling the police non emergency number and they sent the fire department with no sirens. Fireman climbed a ladder to an upstairs window and gained access that way. Baby was fine and sleeping in crib. Can't remember at what point the nanny called the parents, but I believe she did. This was a long time ago!

I always have my keys and phone on me when I'm on the job. I'm so paranoid about this happening. It probably looks tacky, but I clip my keys to my belt loop.

You're not paranoid, just smart.
