Funny how the bitchin' feminists won their own rights on the job, then come home and deny the same rights to their domestic workers... who, btw, make it possible for you to enjoy YOUR career.

Notice the silence...

Yes silence. I have been called a great MB multiple times on this site and frankly I'm just tired of always having to defend the good employers who exist. I don't know why shitty employers do what they do because I don't think like them.

Having been raised by a feminist mother, she would NEVER treat, or speak of, our housekeeper the way SOME mb's here seem to treat their child's nanny.

We were raised to treat and respect our housekeeper the same way ANY woman should be treated at her workplace.

I was also raised to treat my employer with respect as well, not the way that SOME of the nannies on here act towards their employers, the same way ANY person should treat their employer at their workplace.

What rights are nannies being denied? They are paid more than double minimum wage, they get many more days off and vacation and holidays than your average walmart or mcdonalds worker. They work inside in nice conditions, not hard manual labor.

I really would like to know how nannies are being mistreated.

Hmm...wouldn't it be awesome if the OP of the thread had linked to an article on the very subject we're discussing?

Hmm...wouldn't it be nice if a nanny had an actual experience with the survey done for this very article and explained why it's totally bogus and was retracted in the NYTimes?

Who thinks it's right to be able to put a live-in nanny on the street without notice, and without cause?

My impression is that there are two completely separate labor markets for nannies in this area. One labor market consists largely of undocumented women who are paid ridiculously low wages and treated poorly (e.g., if I come home early from work, I send you home and you don't get paid). The undocumented live-ins are among the worst-treated. The other labor market consists of nannies that are citizens or have green cards, command wages in the range of $20/hr plus overtime, get paid sick and vacation of several weeks a year, regularly get sent home early when their bosses come home, and do things like run their own errands (post office, shopping, doctor's calls or even visits, etc) while taking care of their charges. The latter is really not a bad job -- my mom, who had more education and earned less money in a physically demanding position, is always astounded by how easy our nanny has it. So I don't think you can paint with a broad brush.
And by the way -- about 88% of the US work force are "at will" employees now -- so we're pretty much all in that particular boat.

Most nanny employers have a boatload of expected benefits, which of course they take for granted. The women's rights fight has benefited most women, except their domestic employees.

The irony!

Why would you want to assume that every employer is a "good" employer? Your personal standard of ethics isn't a common trait among nanny employers in our society.

I've been in this field for quite a few years, so I've directly experienced both the good and the bad. I will always appreciate the good employers I've been blessed to have. As for the bad ones, I've learned a lot from them too.
