St Lawrence University

I've seen a few recommendations on different threads about St. Lawrence. I'd love to hear more about it for a kid who loves nature, and is kind of a careful nerdy kid. She is not the sorority/frat type but always has a small group of good friends. She is a very good student and plans on getting a Ph.D.

TBH, is there a chance that you're mixing up Saint Lawrence University in NY with Lawrence University in Wisconsin? Both are somewhat similarly ranked, but are very different schools. Lawrence is smaller, with a very good music conservatory and a reputation for serious students who end up getting PhDs in subjects like physics. I don't know much about Saint Lawrence, but visited Lawrence with DC last year and liked it a lot. Our daughter ended up at Oberlin, which has some similarities on academics, but would have been very happy at Lawrence.

Saint Lawrence is a party school built around a hockey team. There may be better options for your daughter.

I’m an alum and I have no idea what it’s like now but back when I was there it was not a place for nerdy. I loved it but it was 80% Greek at the time. That has changed a lot as the fraternities have been decimated but it’s a heavy drinking school I’m sure. That being said, it’s a small liberal arts college near the Adirondack’s and attracts alot of outdoorsy private school types. My Dd got huge merit aid and sometimes wishes she attended but she didn’t (it was her safety).

I meant Saint Lawrence in NY. Yes, DD is nerdy (should have said studious) but athletic and pretty outdoorsy. The Adirondack Semester is what piqued her interest. It might end up being a good safety school for her.

My DD toured and interviewed there and it was her favorite college tour—great vibe and a sense that each student is known and gets personal attention. But it is very rural/remote and cold/snowy in winter.

I’m in the northeast and have known at least a dozen kids who went there. All are bright, healthy, friendly, outdoorsy, mc to umc, generally (not exclusively) left-leaning but without being ideological. Pretty sporty. High enthusiasm, high EQ. Yes, it’s isolated, but these are the kind of kids who make their own fun.

Where did she end up if you don't mind me asking?

this seems accurate. I will say yes there are rich kids there, has always been a haven for rich prep school kids who don't get into the top schools, but they are usually a little more down to earth than most. I guess being holed up in snowy Canton NY all winter does not attract the real snobby rich kids. Not a place for designer clothes.

I think it’s pretty challenging to get there. My friends drive and it involves a ferry ride. (I know that sounds like fun until you miss it and have to wait until the next one).

St. Lawrence University sits on a beautiful campus in a cold, isolated location. Like most other small (2,300 students) LACs located in isolated, cold weather areas, drinking is big.

Lots of merit scholarships. Good for those with an interest in ice hockey & camping in the Adirondacks. (St. Lawrence sold their ski slope decades ago, thus it is no longer a great destination for snow skiers.) Lots of athletes.

Strong alumni association.

Some interesting majors & opportunities to study abroad.

PhD in which subject area ?

St. Lawrence grads are often successful in the business world, but if set on earning a PhD, there are better options.
