Winter Activity Options

I am looking for a sport for my 8 year old to take up during the Nov to March months. What suggestions do you have? He has vetoed basketball and swim (tried them in past years and didn't love). He is a year round soccer player, and is athletic and likes to move. He enjoys baseball and football but obviously those arent offered in the winter months. We are considering volleyball, but I'm trying to think of other options. What have your kids done during these months that they've enjoyed? We are in Falls Church VA if that makes a difference. Thanks!

Futsal is the obvious answer, and Arlington does indoor soccer

This Flag program is offered in the winter: NFL POLAR YOUTH FLAG FOOTBALL LEAGUE

If he can't think of anything else, Sign him up for conditioning classes at Capstone (Falls Church).

Vienna rec soccer has Frosty Fields winter soccer. Another +1 for futsal as well.

OP here. We have done and enjoyed indoor soccer previously, looking for something besides soccer, but I do appreciate those ideas! Wrestling is one I hadn't thought of. Interesting that boys don't play volleyball much... the leagues I'm seeing are coed which is fine. Keep the ideas coming! Thanks.

Learn to skate w/ an eye toward hockey.

Another (pricey) option would be to do weekly hitting lessons at one of the private centers. Some of those may offer semi-private classes as well.

Give Squash a try. McLean Youth Squash offers a program for kids his age at the McLean Raquet Club. If he likes baseball, some skills are transferable.

Ninja, indoor lacrosse if it's in your area, rock climbing

If he has basic skating skills, speed skating! United Capital Blades is offering free first-time sessions.

Something that isn't a "ball sport" and that would enhance overall fitness and develop new skills... like others have suggested, skating, climbing, or ninja classes. Gymnastics, too. Gyms offer either coed or boys' classes.
