Our house was finished 4 years ago, almost to the day. When we leave for a while (like a week’s vacation), I always notice “new house smell” when we get home. It’s not overwhelming, but it’s there.
Anyone else have this? Maybe it’s a because of the HVAC running less while we are gone? When will this go away? I thought everything would be off-gassed by now. |
Oh, i was hoping to learn houw yo get new house smell. You want to get rid of it. We live in an 1880s rowhouse with two pets. It always smells closed in/dusty when we return from vacation. |
Same. Must be the time of year. I came here to start a post and saw this one. I think I’ll start a post rather than hijack this one. |
Here we go with "dusty" smelling houses again. I have no idea what dust smells like. |
This is interesting OP. A friend of mine bought a new-build in 1999 and up until the time they sold it 18 years later it still had that new house smell. I commented on it over the years (not in a negative way), she never noticed it but I sure did. There were two rooms in her home that she hardly ever used - the formal living and dining rooms. Both were at the front of the house flanking the front door, which leads me to think this is why I would notice the smell when I walked in. The wood floors and walls were untouched and pristine, all the living was done in the back of the house. |
Well be thankful that you don’t. It’s quite unpleasant. |
Our house is over 10 years old, we weren’t the first owner, and we still get that “new house smell” when we return from vacation |
Wow the “old house spinoff” thread was much more prolific! Thanks to all who replied- at least I know this is “normal.”

It’ll be 14 years next month and we still get it! I like it. |
