Best place for teen to get ears pierced on MoCo

A doc at her pediatrician’s office does it (Capital Medical Group); is that the best way? I don’t want to do Claire’s. Thanks.

Find a tattoo/piercing place. Seriously. They are the professionals. You want them to use a needle and to pick out good jewelry. The doctors offices use the little earring guns and those are not good.

Anyone have recommendation for a good piercing place?

So just my experience… DD wanted hers done at 5, we went to a tattoo place, spent a fortune, she took them out for gymnastics camp a month later, they never went back.
At 9 she wanted them again, had a local piercer do them. One got infected, took them out, never went back in.
At 11 wanted them again, I told her she needed to pay if this time and were just going to Claire’s. Guess what…. The Claire’s earrings are still in 2 years later and no issues.
It’s not as cheap as it used to be fyi…. The woman was super professional, everything sterilized etc…..

Would absolutely not let my kid get their ears pierced at the mall or with a piercing gun anywhere. Though many get their ears pierced at Claire's or similar without incident, when I was in HS, a classmate of mine became ill after a mall ear piercing and I've never forgotten it.

And while some mall stores state that they disinfect their tools beforehand, you can't actually sterilize a piercing gun. And this is important because sterilization kills all "viable microorganisms," while disinfection simply "reduces the number of viable microorganisms," according to the Duke University and Medical Center.

"Piercing guns can not be sterilized because they are made of plastic. The plastic would melt in an autoclave, which is what we used to sterilize instruments like needles, jewelry, and any tools we might use during the piercing," says John Joyce, a professional piercer with 18 years of experience and the owner of Scarab Body Arts in Syracuse, New York.

Even if a piercing gun is wiped off with an antiseptic wipe, there's still a risk of spreading diseases (think hepatitis and staph infections) after multiple use, according to the Association of Professional Piercers (APP). And sadly, it's the people most likely to have their piercings done at the mall whose health is the most compromised. "Babies, young children, and others with immature or compromised immune systems may be at higher risk for contracting such infection."

I had asked the same question here and got a recommendation for Bethesda Tattoo. We went there and it was a great experience! No issues at all. I shared the rec with several friends and all have had good experiences as well.

upperlobe.com was recommended by a friend. She comes to your home. Haven't used her service yet.

If they became ill from an infection, you have no way of knowing if the infection started with the piercing gun. It’s more likely it came from her hands, or drool at night or who knows. You’re creating a wound, wounds can get infected. This article seems like click bait.

Editing to add:
They use a needle. You can only use the jewelry they sell there. Excellent care instructions for afterwards. My kid had gotten them pierced at our pediatrician’s office at age 6 and they got infected. Went to Bethesda Tattoo when rhey were 12 or 13 and no issues.

I tried Capitol Medical which was very hard to book. Then it got cancelled and was hard to rebook. Everyone had told me to go to Claire's and in the end that is what we ended up doing. It was fine. They clearly pierce ears all day every day. They came out even on her ears and she has never had an infection.

Bethesda Tattoo is the go-to place.

Another vote for Bethesda Tattoo. My DD got her ears pierced there and it was a good experience.

Thank you - we’ll go to Bethesda tattoo.

Bethesda tattoo says no swimming for 3 months after a piercing so we are waiting, it's hard to find 3 months for a swimmer.

Do other places recommend the same? It seems long.
