NP here, Flint Hill calls them that as well. But they’re just emulating the better DC schools, right? Our list from the CC department specifically says that foundation schools should be the majority of your applications and are most likely but not guaranteed for admission.

Big 3 or not...you’re placing too much weight on your school counselor.
She can’t write essays for them or do anything about their transcript.
Help your kid write their resume. Start apps and essays this summer. Apply wisely.
What else do you want? If you have a network, go for it. Donate millions, reach out to your buddy Bill Gates.
What the hell do you expect from your school counselor? She’s not a miracle worker.

I wish the OP had told us what private school. Our kid has similar stats at a Big 3 - That said this is why despite being at a big 3, we are hiring a private outside college counselor. Rejected: Northeastern, Vandy, Tulane, Emory
This does not make sense. He got both rejected and waitlisted to Tulane? Didn't get into Vermont out of state with a 3.9 GPA and 1540 SAT?
OP explained she made a typo with Tulane. Last I read, her DS is trying to get off CWRU’s waitlist. There have been lots of people posting how their high stats kids were rejected or WL from surprising places, so don’t be too shocked about VT.

You would think some people on this board have never experienced disappointment, or needed advice or empathy. What, are you a automaton? Grow up! You’ve never been disappointed at a major life event? And yes, college is a major life event. Maybe a job offer you didn’t get, a relationship that didn’t work out, a move that seemed like it was great but ended up with tons of unexpected challenges, or whatever? Come on. Kids and their families are allowed to be disappointed and want to try for better outcomes. No one said it was on par with fighting cancer or being homeless.

Yes, calls have been made. Counselor was surprised by results as well. We are just waiting to hear if any WL moves.

This must be a term the new counselor has brought in with her. I've had two DDs go through college counseling at NCS in recent years, and I've never heard that term used before.

Not the PP but it’s not so simple this year. Waitlists at some places won’t move at all, or only a little. And some have waitlists miles long and my DC’s school isn’t the only with with counselors calling.
I’m sure the counselors are making contact, but there isn’t much to do after sending in the letter of continued interest and cross your fingers. Chances are something will not come through unless your child is waitlisted at a school T40 and lower. One of my DC’s friends did get off a waitlist of a T50 school but for the life of me I don’t remember which one. I do know it’s in California.
Very tough year for some kids. It may be a long summer waiting for those WL calls that may never come.
