This is no different than if you had been home with the kids. Is your husband never to leave you home alone with the twins? Ridiculous. Shit happens. Thankfuly she has the sense and ability to go find your husband to rescue her.

This could have happened to anyone, you included. You “let” her go home early. I hope she didn’t have to ask. Your concern seems to be focused on your children who were safe in their high chairs with their father close by not on the woman who just almost choked to death. If I were her, I’d quit.

When I was in HS I was in the passenger seat in a friend’s 2 door car and another friend in the back seat behind me started choking. The driver, also in HS, saw in the rear view. She stopped the car in the middle of the road, ran around the car, opened my door, pushed my seat forward, pulled our friend out, and did the Heimlich on the side of the road. I was completely clueless that he was choking and she was so terrified that she couldn’t say anything, only act. Thankfully she was successful, but it was so scary.

I’m very particular about what I let my kids eat in the car for this reason.

OP, we had a feeding tub installed in our nanny. Saves so much time (she can have her meals on the run!), and I sleep soundly, knowing I’ll never have to come home to a messy playroom because the nanny has been dead in my kitchen since lunch.

I’m confused about OP’s actual concern/question. Obviously, they experienced a freak accident that thankfully was resolved without issue. But the question about what kind of person to leave the children with makes no sense. Their nanny was plenty qualified, the kids were safely contained, and she sought help from the other person at home. Freak accidents can occur at any point in time. How is this a nanny question. I hope OP reached out later that same day to check in on her though.

14 month-olds text now?

I live alone and don't own any chairs. I'm going to get that. Thanks!

A counter top will also work. You just need something that you can forcefully push against

?? You have to bend over a chair and push forcefully. It’s not easy.

There are a lot of different techniques actually

Give OP contact info for you so you can teach a special class for her nanny. You are as despicable as OP.

Why do you have such an explosive reaction?
Doing downface dog / putting your body in an upside down position in another technique for choking. That's a life saving fact

Anonymous wrote:Our nanny (mid-20s) choked while having lunch with our toddler twins today. We usually work outside the home but thank god my husband had a migraine today and called in or today could have gone very differently.

She was eating a grape when she started choking. The same grapes she served our toddlers but instead of being cut into fours she ate one whole and choked. We just watched the security camera facing the kitchen and you can literally see the panic set in and she grasps her hands around her neck and stands up trying to cough. She tried to perform the Heimlich on herself with our chair but failed. That’s when she walks out of frame of the camera.

She walked upstairs into our bedroom and banged on the door where my husband said he opened the door to her purple faced and about to pass out. Thankfully we trained for this before we had kids, but never did he expect to perform the Heimlich on an adult. Let alone our nanny. It came out fairly quickly he said and she was ok. Crying but ok. He rushed downstairs where she had left our twins (14 months old) in the high chair where they were eating like nothing happened.

We let her go home early and said maybe she should go to urgent care. Not sure if she did.

I’m glad everything is ok but honestly it makes me scared to have her back here tomorrow. What if DH wasn’t here? What would have happened to my kids? What if they choker? Fell? How can we prevent this again?

Well, you DH was there. She cut the grapes for your kids but not for herself. I eat whole grapes all the time and have never choked as have billions of other people.

You should fire her because your ridiculous "what ifs" and you should quit your job and stay home and chew your children's food

If you keep up your nonsense she will quit..

OMG, OP, you sound awful.

Thank goodness that woman survived.

She choked and nearly died and now you're worried about her ability to take care of your kids?

She's a nanny not superhuman.

OP you are aware of the current economic climate? Half a million jobs created just last month? 3.4% unemployment? Two jobs for every applicant?

You are plain stupid if you let this young woman see your disregard for her well being. But honestly, there are probably a lot of nicer families who deserve her more. So go ahead and tell her how disappointed you are in her.

This seems like a good idea! I would order right now but it says unavailable. I am glad your nanny is ok, your kids are ok.

I had a coworker choke and she came first to me and I could NOT figure out why she wasn't speaking, but I yelled for help, another coworker came and did the heimlich, and coworker was ok but very upset and went home.

Choking isn't any kind of bad decision, it just can happen. I suppose nanny, if alone, might have used the phone somehow - can you text 911? Or just call, not speak, but they will come? Not sure.
