Poland, Krakow especially, stunned me with its beauty, history and people. I loved it and wish I could have lingered.

Mongolia is fantastic, go now before the traditional culture disappears further, recent mining discoveries are changing the country quickly. It has the fastest growing economy in the world. Terrible food though, unless you like mutton.

My old nanny is from StLucia (Caribbean) and one year we visited her country with her .It was great! For $400 we got a place to stay,cook and a maid .We spent a month there.The people are the friendliest.The ocean is magnificent,mountains were great for hiking and biking and the food was great.If you want the info just send me your email address and I would send it to you .Good luck with your decision

Quick plug for France - while it is true that August is traditionally when most French families go on holiday, it's also the month that museums offer extended hours. There are fewer international tourists around Paris during that time, but more French families from other provinces. If you do some searches now for projected closures, and try to see if the restaurants you want to visit are open/or not, you can mitigate the guessing game once you are there. There's also several fun festivals put on at the time. Anyway, there are lots of good recommendations on here - have fun wherever you decide to go!

I love Norway. It's perfect for outdoorsy types, and we had an incredible time there.

We did that a couple of summers ago and had a great time! I remember thinking "why don't more Americans come to Lake Balaton?" and then I realized it's not really all that convenient, but it is nice.

Thanks - good to know! When we tell people we are going, they sort of look confused like "why would you go there?", but I think it looks great. A little bit of history, a little bit of relaxing, and good food.

This is on my short list!!! Please tell us more -- how did you get there, did you ride across the steppes, did you use a travel agent/tour company, how was the food, etc.
