Unlike you I actually read the European press. I am not going to waste my time with some maga nitwit. Europe is planing on spending the equivalent of $850 billion a year rearming. This will be done without US weapon systems.

Bet you do not even know which NATO members gave up nuclear weapons?


I was at a meeting where an investment advisor opined that European defense stocks are the hot ticket for the moment.

The Wagner guy was probably one of the problematic "waiting in the wings" people -- but Putin did us the favor of taking him out himself, due to his own paranoia. I'm not sure there's anyone that really "waiting in the wings" that has any real cojones at this point. Putin eliminates anyone that seems like they have the capacity for independent thought and action. Chaos might be waiting in the wings. Or maybe just incompetence. If we are wildly lucky, there is a lurking Gorbachev type who is greatly irritated by all this, but sitting tight until he or she (who am I kidding -- it's Russia. He.) can build some kind of a coalition.

I didn't read the article, but as a former student of the Soviet Union, I'll note that historically the period AFTER a war is very dangerous for Russian political leaders. Engagement in WWI definitely led directly to the revolution, as you had lots of trained, armed, disaffected peasants returning home feeling pissed and taken-advantage of. The Russian invasaion of Afghanistan (1979-1989) was a major factor in disaffectation with the Soviet authorities. Going back further, the Crimean War led to a lot of instability and dissatisfaction with the Tsar, leading to assassination attempts and ultimately a successful assassination of a Tsar.

Sorry, Kochanie, but there are plenty of us who still have close family there even though the first in my case arrived in 1890s. And plenty of us have zero connection to the former Austrian partition. And plenty of our families crawled out of the Pennsylvania coal mines and moved to blue Midwestern states.


I have no special interest in a country that doesn't acknowledge my heritage.
