I guess if I could go back in time and talk to the younger me I would say: trust me it looks beautiful! As you get older you will get fat for real and won’t be able to wear crop tops for real. Enjoy it while it lasts and believe me it does look beautiful.

Um— YOU are referring to this as a “minor imperfection.” Implying that perfection (apparently meaning being without any visible fat) is what she “should” have and this is causing her not to be “perfect.” It’s just her body! It’s just fat! It’s supposed to be there! This is so messed up.

I have a 13 yr old and she has never mentioned crop tops or her stomach- or her body at all to be honest. She’s athletic and seems happy, she just doesn’t fixate on her looks at all.

This is due to your DD’s environment OP. Maybe you/home? Maybe her friends at school or social media. How are her friends dressing? At 12, it is hard bc there are so many different shapes and stages of development going on. Some girls look 8 and some look 16.

Personally I would reassure her she is heathy and beautiful and not feed into her stomach obsession. Ignore it. If you see dangerous eating habits start happening, therapy and nutritionist. But I do think it is within the realm of normal and not (yet) dangerous for girls to want their body to look a certain way. Most let go of that notion naturally in time and don’t spiral into a dangerous eating disorder. Don’t give her looks or body any attention or comments- at all. And be on the lookout in case things take a bad turn

At that age my DD lost 10 lbs in a month but basically starving herself (she was not fat). Its the age that girls start to notice other girls not looking like "little kids" anymore and turning into slimmer teens. That year started my DD's eating disorder which turned into bulimia by 16. She has been recovered for 3-4 years now but she just texted me from the beach on spring break saying "I hate this", because she had to put on a bathing suit and go to the beach with her friends. For context, she wears a size 6-8 at age 21, she is not fat, but she is convinced she is. Her belly has always been a sore spot. Please do not feed into your DD's obsession in anyway and keep a careful watch on her.
