Silver Spring doesn’t have cranes all over the place. To the contrary, day by day stores and restaurants closing. Apartments in DTSS are cited by the county for rodents and infestations. I live here and have seen the steady decline over the last two decades. The county is doing NOTHING.

Bethesda is a different story but it still doesn’t compare to NoVa. A couple of streets with nice stores and restaurants. OK.

And as for the poster who said people in the area are NIMBYS - to the contrary. We welcome thoughtful development. But the county is doing nothing on that front and is instead giving handouts for developers who simply want to build and pay none of the infrastructural impact taxes. This leads to further decline of roads and schools, etc.

My kids are in MCPS schools. When they graduate in a few years I will be moving.

It's true that Moco has become very tired. A mix of NIMBY older people who are very pleased with themselves for buying their houses 30 years ago and want absolutely nothing to change. And a very large working class immigrant population that has presented a lot of challenges to up-county schools and social services.

But there is nothing in Moco to attract new businesses, young professional families, entrepreneurs, middle class folks, creative types, and all the other people that communities need to be dynamic and interesting. Moco is paralyzed by stasis.

And so we have this bifurcated county. Older homeowners below the beltway who want things to be 1994 forever. And newer immigrants north of the beltway who have their own communities, but aren't really part of the larger whole. I don't think that makes for a healthy county.

Some new rental apartments in Bethesda doesn't really change things.
