My younger sister, with whom I get along but we are not particularly close has 3 kids. The middle child appears to have some major issues. In only a handful of times I have been around him (5 years old now) he has incredible anger and rage and threatens violence toward others. He also has a speech impediment. My mother tried to voice her concerns to my sister and my sister completely cut my mother out of her life. As much as I would like to say something, it would lead no where other than my sister never talking to me again. Then I would know nothing about my nieces and nephews. So I keep quiet.

A few weeks ago I posted a picture on Facebook of my infant daughter wearing a cute homemade hat made by my SIL. It was posted as a thank you to SIL. A FB friend who I went to high school with but who I have not talked to since then sent me an IM with a caution about using the hat with an infant because it was made with the "googly eyes" that come off and could choke her. She couched it with an apology for bringing it up but she said she would feel awful if she never brought it up and something happened. She said she hoped that I would take it in the spirit it was intended. I read it and then replied with a heartfelt thank you but then reassured here that my baby was only wearing the hat for the purpose of a photo thank you and that she does not regularly wear the hat at all. I was not in the least bit offended. I have no problem with people giving me unsolicited advice as long as it is does once, kindly, and not pushed on me otherwise.

Wow - I disagree 100%!!! If I thought my sister was doing something that would emotionally hurt my nephew I would explode at her - and then apologize but definitely restate my objections calmly later. I love my nephew and my sister!!! These are not some random strangers whose business I can butt out of - they are constants in my son's, DH's and my life.
