Oh my god lady. No.

1) how often is there a bathroom with a sink RIGHT NEXT TO THE FIELD? Where a player can just quickly duck in, wash hands, change tampon, wash hands, and get right back on the field in less than 2 minutes?
2) you have to get to the field early to warm up. I've had times when my super plus tampon barely lasted 30 minutes. Not often, but it's happened. So include travel time from home, war mup time, and now before the game has started it's been 2 hours since I've had a good bathroom nearby.
3) yes pads sucks! The bunch up and don't stay in place which leads to what? LEAKS.

Realize that your barely-there flow of essentially spotting is not the reality for many women and girls.

In the very unlikely event that a girl unexpectedly has a bleed through with a white uniform, hopefully it could easily be handled by a quick mention during a substitution. Seems like the odds of white shorts causing embarrassment would be minuscule.

I started this thread to get some non-soccer perspective. Take a look-see.

Says the dad.

Seriously, hope this person doesn't have daughters, or possibly even a wife, or works with women....

So thankful both my kids teams wear black shorts (one DD on rec, one DS on travel)
This is one of those things that is SO simple to address, and would make a genuine difference to some girls precisely at the time in their life when they may be considering leaving sports. The fact that there is push-back is astonishing.

Ok...that is part of the problem. Half of all humans menstruate for half of their lives and we can't discuss it without it being " very uncomfortable"? I have to sit through ads and spam mail about erectile dysfunctional all day everyday and we can't discuss leaking on white shorts? Let's get dark shorts for teen and tween female teams. This one should be easy.

Seriously. What's strange and uncomfortable is that this isn't already obviously part of the conversation. Can you imagine kits being designed without sweating taken into account? Sheesh.

I mean, wearing multiple layers of underwear, padding, and shorts is one options -- obviously even with dark shorts girls and women are going to need to manage menstruation -- but white thin shorts really do make it worse.

I'm a parent of boys and girls. I would be happy if teams of both sexes abandoned light colored shorts. They are a pain to keep clean for parents of both genders and pose an embarrassment risk for girls.

Also, it's not always about being prepared for a single game. Plenty of tournaments (or even regular league schedules) have double headers with waiting around time in between. Why the hell is this so hard to understand?

Anonymous wrote:This topic came up at our club this summer and the only people arguing against white shorts were rec moms on our volunteer board (whose kids wouldn’t even wear the shorts). The middle aged men and travel moms saw no problem with the white shorts and were annoyed with the rec moms because as one man mentioned to me later, they don’t understand the look of soccer kits and should just stick to rec issues and in house no one cares how the kid is dressed. I agreed with the rec moms but it seemed like a done deal so I just didn’t say anything, my child’s coached was in favor of the white shorts. I do not like them.

Not really surprised that the rec side moms were the voice of reason and the travel people were nuts. (And my kids play travel!)

Maybe that girl is ten or eleven.
Maybe she's only menstruated 3 or 5 times in her entire life and is just figuring it out.
Maybe she is fifteen and has endometriosis or fibroids and heavy flows.
Maybe she hasn't bled through her shorts but she's terrified that she will.

Who knows?

Ask any adult woman if they have ever had a leak, and in particular if they have ever had a leak while wearing light-colored pants. And been embarrassed.

The odds are certainly not minuscule!

My DD always wears spandex under her shorts regardless of color. This may help for any surprises

You must be a man. Every woman who menstruates has had the experience of leaking at some point (even if not visibly), and young girls whose cycles are not yet established and whose periods may start unexpectedly are particularly vulnerable to this.
