Someone who was extremely frugal did not have a cushy life.

I would start w cutting out the idea that she has a long and wonderful life ahead of her as it may allow you to be a little bit more compassionate and patient. It’s great that she’s healthy now but that can turn in a dime (and it will change soon regardless.) even if, against all odds, she’s a 95 year old miraculously from debility and pain in 20 years, at that point all of her peers will have died, most likely. Seniors can have wonderful meaningful lives but don’t act like being a 75 year old is a lark!

That’s not really what living in an ivory tower means.

None of my older female relatives worked for long, OP. Yet they all know how hard it was, and is, to juggle full-time jobs with raising children.

If you think your MIL doesn't understand, you mustn't allow yourself to get too frustrated. Perhaps she does get it, but doesn't feel you should be whining about it all the time.

BTW - there is only learning loss if you didn't take measures yourself to stave it off. Ultimately your kids' education is your responsibility. I know it's hard - my oldest has SN and I've always had to teach him outside of school, even before Covid.

Your family gets 16k tax free from her a year and you are complaining? We get zero $, have given tens of thousands to support my MIL financially, drive her to the doctor and hospital multiple times a month, and have to deal with her constant anxious phone calls. Can we trade? Smh. You sound tone deaf.

OP- this is not unique. There are a lot of people with relatives in that age group who are exactly the same. You don't need to educate her on anything. Just ignore her "implied judgment."
